Free Christmas Gifts by Jewell R. Powell

If Jesus were here this Christmas in 2009, what would He give? Trust me, He would not be shopping at Macy’s for Christmas gifts. I believe He would give the following:

1. Love to all the sinners and saints
2. Forgiveness
3. Peace on Earth
4. Hope to all

These are the same free gifts that you can extend to your family, friends, and yes, even those who may not like you. We are going into a new year; therefore, a new beginning. Let’s do what Paul did “but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Phil 3:13-14).

To extend those gifts may be hard, but ask the Lord to help. It is the highest calling.

Therefore give the gift of: 1) Unconditional Love. If someone has done something that hurt you, extend love to them with no strings and no expectations attached.

If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a brother or sister, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? (1st John 4:20 NLT). Therefore, send an ecard and say “I Love You”

2) Forgiveness. If someone has hurt you or you have unforgiveness in your heart, forgive them and call them letting them know everything is cool between the two of you.

“But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Matthew 6:15 NLT)

3) Peace. If you and another person have been fighting or haven’t spoken in years, extend peace. Maybe you can visit that person or send an email.

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

4) Hope. I believe we give others hope when we share our experiences and lessons, when we witness to others the good news of Jesus Christ and what He has done in our lives.

This season extend hope to others. Ask Jesus to direct your path this season to use you for His glory. He may have you volunteer, witness to a stranger, give a testimony of His goodness to those you work with it. Just be open to do something for Him.

“For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.” (Philippians 1:20 NLT) Since Jesus is the reason for this holiday season, let’s be like Him and do what He would do on the earth. These are gifts He freely gives us (continually); therefore, as He freely gave, you freely give.

We may not feel like doing those things listed above but the fact is that we are required to do them. You cannot look at the Bible as a menu that you pick and choose what YOU want to do. You can’t select the blessing without first choosing to be obedient. I pray that God will strengthen you.

Christianity Doesn’t Make Sense by Jewell R. Powell

Christianity Doesn’t Make Sense

Lately, God has been really talking to me and teaching me about this Christian walk. What I’ve realize is that Christianity doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t make sense because He always has us doing the opposite of what is normal or right in our minds.

But remember, The Lord says in Isaiah 55:8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways’, declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” I now understand why His disciples and the Pharisees couldn’t understand what He was teaching. It doesn’t make sense.

For example,

1. Tithing 10%, doesn’t make sense because I need it to pay bills (Mal 3:10)

2. Forgiving 70 times 7, even if it is the same person doesn’t make sense. Why? If they are going to keep doing the same things over again why continue to forgive? (Matt 7:21-22)

3. Submiting to my husband. Why should I when he is not even acting right? (Eph 5:22)

4. Loving my wife as Christ loves the church. Are you serious? She has a bad attitude (Eph 5:25)

5. Loving and blessing those who hate me and do me wrong. Are you kidding? (Matt 5:44 & Rom 12:14)

6. If someone slaps me, I can’t hit them back. I am to offer the other cheek (Matt 5:39) [Help me Lord!]

So why are we required to do these things and more? We do it because everything we do, we do as unto the Lord and not to man. It is our way of honoring God and allowing His word to transform us. What doesn’t make sense to us naturally-through our five senses: sight, hearing, taste, feel, and smell; makes sense to our 6th sense (the Holy Spirit, God in us). It is when we do what our 6th sense (God) is telling us to do that we become mature in Christ and we are blessed in our obedience. Christianity is not a religion; it is a way of life. That is why we walk it and talk it by faith, which is God’s way. This is how we please God.

Again, it may not make sense to you but, DO IT! For example, Naaman was told to dip 7 times in the dirty Jordan River to be healed (2nd Kings 5:1-14); Joshua and the Israelites where told to march around the wall seven times, blow a trumpet and shout (Joshua 6:1-17); and Simon Peter was fishing all night and Jesus told him to drop his net in the water (Luke 5:1-11). Read the full story of each, and you will realize that it did not make sense to them but in their obedience, they were blessed.

“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” (James 1:22-25 NLT)Therefore, this Christmas season let’s be like Simon Peter who said in Luke 5:5, “Nevertheless at thy word I will…”May God do exceedingly and abundantly above all you can ask or think in 2009.

Meet Charles H. Carter

Meet Charles H. Carter

Ella: Charles, finish this sentence, I am powerful because…

I am powerful because I have a functioning brain that is utilized on a daily bases. With the assistance of the largest organ in my body, I can form ideas and implement the final process, normally with positive results.

Ella: Albert Einstein stated, “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.” Was there ever a point in your career, when how your life didn’t match the theory? And how did you change the facts?
Albert Einstein also said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”, and, “Not everything that counts can be counted; and not everything that can be counted counts.” But most importantly, he said, “The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible.”

As during the course of my life, there are still presently periods of minutes, hours, days, and sometimes weeks when life as we know it is not as it should be. I don’t believe that this is a fact that will ever change, but as long as we understand that change is normal and utilize our brains to adjust to its ever moving circumstances, it is inevitable that we move forward towards positive minutes, that turn into hours and weeks, etc..

“Love can suck, life is dark and bright at the same time, death can be a relief, down can sometimes be up ~ as up can sometimes be down, light doesn’t always brighten, leaving doesn’t mean gone, open does not mean free to enter, wet doesn’t necessarily have to refer to any form of liquid, truth can be deceitful, justice a thief, glory an insult, soft can be hard enough, music may not be musical, the end doesn’t have to be final, and ~ it’s all subject to change.”
– Charles H. Carter

Intimate Conversation with Charles H. Carter and Ella Curry of EDC Creations

Ella: Where are you from? How did you start your writing journey?
I am from a time period in Baltimore City when men meant what they said and said what they meant. This time period was also stained with pride and principles. We (men) didn’t need a reason to stand, we just stood because it is the manner in which a man carries himself, and one naturally traveled this way, not bent over or dragging himself around.

The time period in which I came to be was also surrounded by injustices that were tossed in ones face daily. A man had three choices, use his gas and electric bill money to hire an attorney, ignore the injustices, or address the injustices yourself. Addressing the injustices yourself means that one may have to meet in an alley, a courtroom, or behind a podium. I have always opted to address injustices myself and in order to keep facts together notes were kept, notes that were organized, notes that were bounded to keep organized, notes that were bounded for years and turned into volumes. Notes that turned into ~ at present ~ seven books.

Ella: Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?
In all seven (7) of my books, be they fictional or non-fictional, my children and I are always the models used to create main characters. What I like about this is that I love having the ability to honestly view my family and myself and document us moving into positive situations, under positive lights, especially since the starting point on so many occasions was somewhere in the dark. This is what makes situations notable and noteworthy

Ella: What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader to pick it up?
Shorts For All Seasons 2008, is a fictional book containing short stories. On the cover is a picture of an exceptional good look young man. Next to his picture is a picture of an exceptionally good looking young woman. Over top of the mans picture is the word ‘Before’. Over top the women’s picture is the word ‘After’. Curiosity causes one to believe that it is almost impossible for this great looking man to have been changed to this woman and then be just as great looking.

Ella: Ultimately, what do you want your readers to gain from your book?
The previous two well received books, Brain Food and Brain Food Two, have been described as follows: The material in this book ~ Pros, Anecdotes and Poems ~ has no scientific foundation, it offers no mathematical certainties, there is no insight on how to save the whales, the ozone layer, and not a hint as to how to live and love.

This book contains opinions based on experiences, observations, wishes, and beliefs on almost every daily topic. Readers will find themselves laughing at the humor and possibly shedding a few tears while affirming this as profound, insightful, and uplifting material, which is a must read.
Simply put, my goal with any material written is to ignite the thought process. One does not have to think like me, just think.

Law To The Order (Excerpts From Jail) Non-fictional — Never incarcerated before, then incarcerated for six months, denied bail, given charges that carry penalties of eight life sentences plus three hundred years, deliberate misconducted investigations, new education, experience, and subsequent release without a trial ~ charges dropped. I equate this situation with one that happened many, many years ago, where men, women and children were stripped of all of their human rights, taken by force away from their homelands and onto boats filled with despair, hate, violence and suffering. These people, after spending months on these boats were dropped off in the ‘Americas’, a world and life of slavery. No names were changed to protect the innocent, because there was only one, and he doesn’t mind his name being known.

Brain Food 2008 (Unpublished) — What we think defines how and when we move. In the darkest recesses of our minds, thoughts take root and grow, eventually sending us in the direction we travel. Brain Food 2008, initiates the rooting process that ultimately gives birth to hundreds of thoughts with topics that range from masturbation to presidential acts. The message in this book is clear: Thoughts geared towards igniting the thought process.”Come on in and exercise that brain.”

Don’t View Until After My Demise: Revisited — This book is the continuation of the book ~ Don’t View Until After My Demise ~ that chronicles the authors life as a boy ~ coming of age, a teenager, drug abuser, police officer, a father and more importantly, as a man with principles that experience has taught him to hold on to. Readers will find countless tales of courage and intriguing events that reflect the many inequalities of our society as well as the lack of justice for those who badly need it. The message in this book is clear: it is difficult for a human to be legal in a system that is fueled by illegalities.

Again, simply put, my goal with any material written is to ignite the thought process.

Ella: What is the one most surprising thing you have learned in creating books?
One can build worlds with a tool as simple as a ink pen.

Ella: What would you say has been the most significant achievement as a writer? How did you do it?
My most significant achievement as a writer is to still be alive and able to document a life overflowing with trials and tribulations. How did I manage to accomplish staying alive is a fact that even I can’t figure out to this day.

Ella: What advise would you give a new writer?
I don’t believe that there are ‘new writers’, writing is how you are, not what you do. We write because we have to, it is a part of our DNA. From the time you learn to put the pen to paper up until the time you can no longer write, writers write. My advise for any writer is to keep that note pad close and ink pen at the ready, because there is no telling when life or ideas need documenting and you don’t want to lose the thought.

The only thing that I’d change about my journey is, I wish I had carried my note pad and pen with me earlier and more often.

Ella: What can we expect from you in the future?
I don’t have a clue as to what can be expected from me in the future, there is to much time in front of me and I have to allow room for change ~ change is inevitable.. I hope the future brings book, after book, after book. Two books I just completed: (Both Unpublished)

Meet Author Che Parker

Intimate Conversation Che Parker

Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Author Che Parker has a passion for the story behind the story. What we see on the surface may not always be as we perceive it to be. In his first novel, The Tragic Flaw, Che Parker unravels the dark truths behind the collages of life and the mysteries of the underworld in a powerful tale.

Che Parker attended college at Grambling State University in Grambling, LA and later graduated from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, with a Bachelor’s in Arts degree in Communications Studies.

He began his professional writing career as a newspaper reporter for The Call Newspaper covering local crime and politics in both Kansas and Missouri. He later moved to Washington, DC, as a staff writer covering national healthcare issues and Capitol Hill hearings for the American Hospital Association.

Che is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Writing at Johns Hopkins University. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated and resides in Alexandria, VA with his family where he works in Public Relations and Marketing.

Intimate Conversation with Che Parker and Ella Curry of EDC Creations

Ella: Che, finish this sentence: I am Powerful because…
I am Powerful because… I’ve been blessed with a God given talent to create stories with words. These stories can be insightful, funny, scary, and most important of all, influential.

Ella: What was childhood like in MO? How did you start your writer’s journey?
I’m was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. Growing up I witnessed a lot of troubling events, like many kids in the inner city do. I was fortunate enough to have a loving and supportive family who wanted to see me do well, so I was able to attend good schools, but I never forgot my roots. My family and friends were never the richest people, but the love and support they offered me was and continues to be what gets me through the day. I always enjoyed writing and I’ve been fortunate enough to have people around me who want the best for me. That can make all the difference.

Ella: Che, tell us about your new book The Tragic Flaw
Following in his Italian father’s gangster footsteps, the bi-racial Cicero Day has little problem rising to the top of the Kansas City underworld. He and his comrades deal with their enemies with all manner of weaponry: guns, knives, poison, trained beasts and even HIV.

Yet, Cicero is haunted by recurring nightmares, and bothered with his mother’s steadfast belief in God. Cicero, who is an atheist, feels there’s no place for myths in a man’s life who is trying to ascend to power. While he is the master of his domain and even viewed as a hero to some, there is an unseen kink in his seemingly impregnable armor.

Ella: Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?
In my second novel, The Precious Life, the two main characters are Joshua and Kathryn Lyon. I like them because they’re ordinary people. A lot of books of have the rich handsome guy and the sexy, beautiful woman. Joshua and Kathryn are neither. It was interesting writing from their perspective because nothing was glamorous, and everything was hard.

Ella: What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader pick it up?
First off, I think I have an amazing cover. It’s very subtle, but I think it’s powerfully suggestive. I think subtlety deserves a second look these days.

Ella: What advice would you give a new writer?
Read, read and read some more. I think by reading diverse fiction writers from around the world a writer can learn new ideas and develop new approaches to material. And let people read your work. Most will probably offer good ideas. Use what you can. But always stay true to the story you want to tell. I wouldn’t change anything about my journey. Everything is a learning experience. Soak up what you can and keep moving.

Ella: What can we expect from you in the future?
Deeper stories, new narratives, and more profound meaning.

Ella Curry of EDC Creations sits down for a chat with author Heather Buchanan

Ella: Tell us what motivated you to write this book.
A group of writers who were celebrating the Christmas holiday in 2007 (and had been part of a writers guild for almost ten years) started thinking about the reasons they loved writing, as well as the obstacles they faced every day. Suddenly, the idea of a book to help other would-be writers was born.

Ella: What genre is your book? Who did you write this book for?
This book is nonfiction and it was written for those out there who fear writing for different reasons.

Ella: What makes your book stand out? Why should we buy your book?
You name any brick wall that stops one from pursuing writing and they are covered in the book. That is reason enough to buy it. The book speaks not just on fear but money problems, support issues, religious obstacles; it even has some humorous stories in it. It motivates, inspires and provides steps on how to get started.

Ella: Do you feel writing is for those trained to write or for anyone who has a story to tell?
Writing is for everyone that has a story to tell, simply because all it takes is putting it down on paper. And with help from others (editors, ghostwriters), the story can become a book.

Ella: As a writer, what are some of the most important things you try to convey to readers through your books?
No one who wants to write out there is alone. Writers around the world share the same problems in getting published and putting their ideas down in print.

Intimate Conversation with author Shelia M. Goss

Intimate Conversation with author Shelia M. Goss

Shelia M. Goss’ journey into the literary world began several years ago. She’s received recognition in Writer’s Digest and The New York Times. Her books have been on bestsellers lists such as the Dallas Morning News, Essence Magazine, and Black Expressions Book Club.

My Invisible Husband, Roses are thorns (Violets are true), Paige’s Web, and Double Platinum are published under Kensington Books Urban Soul imprint. Be on the lookout for two new books in 2009 from Shelia – His Invisible Wife (July 2009) and her first teen book, The Ultimate Test (June 2009). For additional information, visit her website: http://www.sheliagoss.com/.

Shelia’s new release is Double Platinum. Genre: Women’s Fiction
Double Platinum
was written to celebrate my love for R & B music. Besides books, music is my passion. Over the past several years I’ve gotten a chance to interview multi-platinum music artists (Mary J Blige, Brian McKnight, Ne-Yo , India Aire, etc) in various genres and talk to people behind the scenes of the music industry. When I got ready to write the book, I just pulled from that experience. The book is about R & B megastar Parris Mitchell. To the world, it seems like she has it all. But with a declining career, she has nothing left but disappointed fans and growing depression. Hit maker and playboy Casper “CJ The Hit maker” Johnson is looking for a new sound. He needs her voice. She needs her career back. Their drama from groupies and people from their pasts becomes the source of plenty of print for the paparazzi.

Ella Curry of EDC Creations sits down with a one-on-one with Shelia M. Goss

Ella: Shelia, finish this sentence- I am Powerful because…
I am Powerful because…of who made me. God’s love is enough to sustain and empower me on this life’s journey.

Ella: Albert Einstein states, “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.” Was there ever a point in your career, when your life didn’t match the theory?
Yes. There have been several points. I’ll focus on when I first decided to pursue a career in publishing. I was used to excelling at whatever I set out to do and wasn’t used to being rejected. I recall receiving rejection letters. I almost gave up, but there was something within me that wouldn’t let me. I knew this was what I destined to do, so I kept moving forward in spite of the rejections.

Ella: And how did you change the facts?
The rejection I received actually propelled me into a mode of learning more and more about writing, the publishing business, etc. In fact, I can say the rejections fueled the desire within me to be a writer and moved me closer towards my goals.

Ella: Where are you from? How did you start your writing journey?
I am from Louisiana – home of good food and good people J I’m also an alumni of Southern University.

I’ve been writing since I was 9 years old. When I was in elementary school, my teachers submitted my poems to Seedlings. In school, I’ve been on the yearbook staff, newspaper, etc. I decided to pursue writing as a career back in 1997. My first book outside of school was actually a collection of poems. It was called Embraced by Love – The Relationship. My very first customer was Luther Small. He was a co-worker of mine at the time.

Ella: Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?
Parris Mitchell represents the woman scorned. She gave her heart and soul to a man, only to find herself on the losing end of a disastrous relationship. The only difference is her tragedy is displayed in front of the world. She has to fight to regain her self-respect as well as boost her failing career. I like the fact that she doesn’t give up.

Casper “CJ The Hit maker” Johnson is totally opposite from what people would think for a man in that role. Once readers get to know him, they will see that it was all smokes and mirrors. Underneath the hype, he is a very caring and compassionate man. He’s not afraid to stand for what’s right and will do anything for the people he loves.

Ella: What advice would you give a new writer?
If you want to be a writer, write. You’ll never have enough time to write, so carve out time and stick to it. Believe in yourself and don’t let the rejections discourage you.
Ella: What can we expect from you in the future?
In 2009, I will have two books released.
June 2009 – The Ultimate Test: The Lip Gloss Chronicles will be my first young adult novel. It follows the life of three Dallas suburban teenagers as they deal with being in a new high school, boys, growing up, etc. I’m real excited about writing in the young adult genre. To read a review, go to www.sheliagoss.com/teens

July 2009 – My fifth women’s fiction novel – His Invisible Wife will hit stores. Those who have read my first novel – My Invisible Husband, will be happy to know (although not a sequel), a few characters from that book will make an appearance in His Invisible Wife.

Intimate Conversation with Author Tra-C J Pierce

Intimate Conversation with Tra-C J Pierce

Finally, I Found My Place, my new book, is about my journey towards excellence. I am allowing my readers to enter very private areas of my life. I am sharing with them my struggles in my marriage, financially, and as a woman. I had to realize my purpose for being here and what I should be doing with my roles as a mother, wife, Christian, minister, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker.

Women are just so amazing, from the way we walk to the way we express ourselves. We are able to multi-task like nobody’s business. When God made women He really declared His awesomeness, in my opinion. Think about it, creation wouldn’t have been completed without us. I am glad to be a woman. I am delighted that God chose my gender to be female. The truth is we experience many different things that men don’t, because we have so much passion for life.

We have huge agendas, so order is vital to our busy lifestyles. We want everyone to be happy and to have what they need. We are very charitable and donate much of our time to aid others. And we sometimes go without the attention that we need as women.

My book is a self-esteem builder. It‘s really written for women at large. The truth of the matter is every woman is not ready for such information. Every woman is not interested in improving their quality of life. Its purpose is to aid those women who want to live their life to the fullest potential. It’s main purpose is to assist women in finding their place and to live the life that God intended as He intended.

Finish this sentence: I am Powerful because…
I am powerful because I recognize that I am nothing without Christ. He is what makes my life worth living. He is the reason that life is as good as I make it. He is the force that motivates that very thought. Yes, I do believe that I was destined for greatness, but that greatness will only be because of Him. If I should soar it will be because of Him and Him alone. For He is the wind beneath my wing.

Where are you from? How did you start your writing journey?
I was born and raised in Houston, TX. I started my writing journey with speaking. I was called into the ministry at 23. I later began speaking and conducting Seminars. The Seminar materials would be things that I had written.

What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader pick it up?
My book is very down to earth and an easy reader. It’s not intimidating.

Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
I want my readers to gain self-esteem and to learn to be all they can be. I want them also to learn the importance of order and divine placement by God.

What is the one most surprising thing you have learned in creating books?
That I could actually do it.

What would you say has been your most significant achievement as a writer?
Completing this tedious task. I did so by being determined and not giving up.

What advice would you give a new writer?
I really believe everyone has a story. I encourage all aspiring authors to tell there story whether it’s good or bad.

What can we expect from you in the future?
I am the author of 5 books. I hope to get a writing contract and become a world renown Motivational Speaker.

Meet The Sweet Soul Sisters Book Club

Intimate Conversation with The Sweet Soul Sisters Book Club

Ella Curry of EDC Creations sits down for a Intimate Conversation with Shana Plummer Chapter Secretary of The Sweet Soul Sisters Book Club. Join us in greeting the ladies by saying hello in the comments section. Feel free to ask any questions you may have also.

Ella: Shana, how did your organization develop? How many members are in the group?
Shana: In October 2005, four ladies that enjoyed reading books by African American authors decided to change their causal conversation about the latest book into a formal monthly meeting. They named themselves The Sweet Soul Sisters Book Club. Over time, they opened these discussions to other friends and family and now The Sweet Soul Sisters Book Club has 9 members.

Ella: What is the primary mission of the group?
The primary mission of the book club is to broaden our literary experience by reading books written by authors of African American descent. Keeping abreast of the latest books and meeting the author that wrote them all while building life long relationships.

Ella: What does a typical meeting consist of for the members?
Our club usually meets once a month. A typical meeting would consist of discussing book club business, future projects, and trips. Then we move on to a very lively discussion about our latest monthly selection and plenty of good food.

Ella: Do you have an open membership? How can one join your network?
We take on membership on a case by case basis. We are not advertising, but if someone is interested we allow them to share with us, but it takes time to become a member. You can always reach us through our MySpace page.

Ella: Do you have outreach programs or events that we can support?
Every February, in honor of Black History Month we host a book fair at Andrews Air Force base in Camp Springs, MD. This event provides authors the opportunity to showcase their latest literary works. In March/April 2011 the Sweet Soul Sisters will be the hosting book club for the Romance Slam Jam.

Ella: Shana, what do you define as Quality Literature?
Quality Literature is piece of written work that has the ability to withstand time and be passed down through generations. This is a book that you would want to pass on to your children and your grandchildren. Quality Literature also has the ability to evoke emotion. It can provide you with a feeling of joy because of a happy ending or a tear because of sadness or sympathy. It draws you in and holds a place in your heart and memory.

Ella: Tell us a few books that you would define as “Literary Hallmarks.”
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
Native Son by Richard Wright
The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah

Ella: What is the most surprising thing you have learned from a novel?
The most surprising thing that we have learned from a novel is that even though a novel is a piece of fiction; it has some tie to true events. Usually these events have occurred in the authors’ life. Whether it is a story of a broken heart or domestic violence it has some truth and experience behind it.

Ella: What advice would you give a new organization forming a network?
Keep an open mind and listen to all suggestions. It is important to have order, i.e start on time and have an agenda prepared in advance.

Ella: Would you change anything about your journey?
No. Our journey makes us unique.

Ella: Ultimately, what do you want members to gain from your union?
First, we want our members to gain the desire to expand their literary choices. Since each member has a choice of a monthly selection it allows for a good variety. Second, we want our members to gain a connection. The Sweet Soul Sisters are more than just a book club, we are a family and we treat each other with sisterly love and respect.

Meet the Phenomenal Women of Color Bookclub

Phenomenal Women of Color (PWOC) Book Club is a network of professional women who share not only a love for reading but for community service.
When visiting our website one will see that PWOC is dedicated to supporting up-and-coming authors as well as those who are self-published.

We have several pages on our site where authors can submit their latest work.

If an author’s submission is not selected for our reading list, we will display their book and biography as a “Spotlight” author, “Featured Authors”, or “Coming Soon”. We give in-depth reviews of all books and the reviews are posted on our website.

PHOTO: (top to bottom): Shondra Payne, Monica Brodie, Charlotte Ferguson, Rolanda Eaaton (VP) , Nickie J. Rosier (President) *Not pictured, Rhonda Turner.

Our Literary Hallmarks:
“Three Fifty-Seven AM: Timing is Everything” by Kendra Norman-Bellamy & Hank Stewart
“A Woman’s Worth” by Tracy Price-Thompson
“Little Black Girl Lost 1, 2, & 3” by Keith Lee Johnson
“The Coldest Winter Ever” by Sister Souljah

Ella: What do you define as Quality Literature?
A novel that can draw you in with vivid details and launch you into the characters’ lives is a sign of a great novel. When you read the final page and walk away from a novel, you should feel as if you just returned from a journey into the world presented in the book. While reading you became one of the characters and you live their experiences. You should walk away with insight into something previously unknown. You are more than just entertained by the novel, you enlightened. This to me is the definition of quality literature.

Ella: How did your organization develop? How many members are in the group?
PWOC was started June 1, 2006 when I (Nickie) followed the advice of my bother to combine my love for reading and visiting with my friends. I contacted good friend Rolanda and Phenomenal Women of Color Book Club was born. We currently have 6 members.

Ella: What is the primary mission of the group?
“Read. Understand. Be. Phenomenal.” This is the PWOC motto and it defines our primary mission. As a book club we “read”. We read various literature from all genres. Through our reading we will “understand” ourselves, our friends, family, our community, our history, and our society better. When we know better we do better and PWOC will “Be” better each day than we were the day before. We are “Phenomenal” in all aspects. Being phenomenal means we not only take life lessons from our readings to better ourselves but to better those we encounter through volunteer and community outreach.

Ella: Do you have outreach programs or events that we can support?

PWOC supports Memphis Food Bank by taking food donations at every party and event we host. Also, annually PWOC hosts an event known as Kidz Day Out. This event is open to the entire city of Memphis. Kidz Day Out is held every April at a local park.

It is an opportunity for children of all ages to come out and interact with each others regardless of what area of town they are from. KDO promotes unity among children. We provide the children with various games and confidence building activities. Sponsors can donate toys for all age groups to be used as prizes, gift certificates/cards that can be used to purchase food for the event, or volunteer time and/or services. Contact our events coordinator, Shondra Payne at coordinator@pwocbookclub.org for more information on how to support KDO.

Ella: What does a typical meeting consist of for the members?

We begin each meeting with a prayer of unity for our members. After prayer, our secretary verbally presents a re-cap of the minutes from the previous meeting to be approved and we discuss any open issues. Refreshments are served as we begin to discuss the book of the month. Prior to the meeting, each member receives a copy of the discussion questions and during the discussion portion we do a character analysis of the main characters from the book, discuss the author’s writing style, the plot and points of interest.

Afterwards, each member assigns the book a rating from 1 to 5 Nefertitis. If the author is available for a conference call, we contact the author and discuss the book, our review, ratings and other questions with the author. After all official business has been concluded and the review discussion ends, our meeting is officially adjourned.
Ella: Do you have an open membership? How can one join your network?
Currently we are accepting membership applications. We have also launched an online membership division as well. Any interested persons must fill out an application online by going to http://www.pwocbookclub.org/joinus.htm.

Ella: What advice would you give a new organization forming a network?

Do not give up. Have a vision and work hard to make that vision a reality. Do not let the lack of participation or interest from others stop you from working towards your goal. When things don’t go the way you hope, be encouraged that He is positioning the right people and events for you so stay persistent and humble.

Ella: Would you change anything about your journey?
As president of such an awesome book club, I would not change one thing about the journey we have taken. Over the past two years we’ve done a lot of growing and during that time our membership consisted of just the vice president and myself but we had a motto “We are two but we roll like 200!”. We didn’t let our lack of members deter us from operating a successful club. PWOC has established a great reputation and made lasting friendships with other clubs and authors and our long, tedious journey has afforded us these bonds as well as a great appreciation for all that we’ve accomplished.

Ella: Ultimately, what do you want members to gain from your union?
I would like for every member of PWOC to gain a sense of sisterhood. Through reading we are educated, empowered and encouraged. Each member of PWOC has the ability to do the same for themselves as well as their fellow members. The VP and I have a friendship that makes us family and we bring those binding elements with us into our book club. I’d like for everyone to view their fellow book club members as not just friends but sisters that are there for them in all aspects of their lives, not just where PWOC is involved. I want our union to truly make us all “Phenomenal Women of Color”.

Meet Eternity Philops

Intimate Conversation with Author Eternity Philops

Eternity Philops is a born-and-bred native of North Carolina. Birthed in Winston-Salem in 1983, she was raised in the capital city of Raleigh and earned her B.A. Degree in the dual fields of psychology and sociology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has also completed graduate work in the area of conflict resolution.

In addition to becoming an accomplished author, Philops’ ultimate professional goal is to become a counselor, aiding individuals in the understanding of balance between sexuality and spirituality. Since 2004 she has been a contributing writer to SABLE Magazine, an online periodical focused on matters concerning lesbians of color.

In 2006 Philops joined the staff of The NUBIANO Project, an online news source catering to the Black community. But opinion pieces are not Philops’ only forte. Under the former pen name of maLana t., she has had her poetry and short stories featured in a number of publications. Her signature poem, “Attraction”, was featured on the lesbian erotica site, Kuma, in 2006.

In the December 2005 print issue of Gay Black Female Magazine, readers were treated to “Other Side of the Moon”, a short story exploring the road not traveled between two lifelong friends. Always seeking to share her lyrical creations, Philops’ goal as a writer is to add her perspective to the growing genre of Black lesbian fiction. A fresh and unique voice, Philops hopes to one day establish her original writing style into her own well-known oeuvre.

About the Book

“VISIONS OF A CRYPTIC MYSTERY: VOLUME ONE is Eternity Philops’ first accomplished collection. A debut of her unique writing style and talent, VISIONS showcases a diverse compendium of poetry and short stories born to Philops’ over an extensive period of time.

“Divided into concentrated segments, Philops’ literary assemblage encompasses works expressing love, life, and loss. Each piece is a real world reflection of the Black lesbian experience: feel the intense sensations of a woman’s dual physical attraction; look on as two lifelong friends reflect on the path not taken. Submerge yourself in the poetic prose of unconditional love, unfortunate loss, and all that’s inbetween.

VISIONS VOL. ONE will take readers on a journey that delves into their own emotions and passions. From the sexual to the spiritual, Philops’ creative imagery and metaphoric verse brings to life one’s own imaginative and emotional senses.”

Conversation with author Eternity Philops and Ella Curry of EDC Creations

Ella: Finish this sentence– I am Powerful because…
I am Powerful because…I am aware of who I am and what my purpose is in this life…because I have learned that I am a constantly evolving being whose limits are only those I myself have set. But most importantly, I am powerful simply because The Eternal created me to be so.

Ella: Albert Einstein states, “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.”- Was there ever a point in your career, when your life didn’t match the theory? And how did you change the facts?
This didn’t happen so much in my writing journey as it did in my spiritual one. Growing up in a mostly conservative Christian community, we were taught of the “sin” of homosexuality. So imagine the angst I experienced when I learned I was attracted to women instead of men. During this time, the “fact” was that I was hated by God because of my sexuality. As I grew deeper in the Eternal, the “fact” changed, and I learned that I was accepted by God as I am, even if not by people.

Ella: How did you start your writing journey?
Like many writers, I’ve been writing since I was a young child; that’s when I learned I had a natural talent for writing. Over the years I used it to express myself in whatever I was going through, especially when I dealing with my blossoming sexuality. My first semi-professional experience came during my undergraduate years as a film reviewer for my college newspaper. During that time I later became known for my op-Ed pieces, the most memorable and significant one being my personal and very public coming out as a gay Christian, an article rebutting several attacks on the local gay organization. I think this truly marked the beginning of my journey into getting published.

Ella: Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?
My book is a compilation of poetry and short stories, and thus doesn’t have just two main characters. Even still, I’m not sure I could choose if I wanted to. All of my characters encompass strong and unique personalities. In the story “Bait & Switch”, Ny’Kah is a woman confident and self-assured almost to the point of being conceited, while Lena in “An Affirmative Action”, also confident and self-assured, is less of a shark and has a more sincere heart. Overall, their variety and strength of character is what I like most about my created personalities.

Ella: What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader pick it up?
In terms of the physical, my book has a unique appearance in that it has an attractive color and pattern. Designed by my own hands, I sought to create a cover that would reflect the tone of the title and make a reader explore it out of sheer curiosity; I wanted a cover that created a desire to know what this little volume holds within its covers. What is most eye-catching is the ankh centered in the middle of the cover, its brightly colored gold a stark contrast to the deep and vibrant purples throughout. The ankh is my adopted spiritual symbol, and a meaningful icon to many. That feature alone would very well entice a reader to seek what’s inside.

Once in hand, what sets my book apart is that it combines poetry and fiction, two literary worlds in one nice little package. From there, what attracts readers is the uniqueness of my writing and the exceptional quality of it; I’ve done my best to reflect in my creations a sense of literary refinement. But perhaps what makes VISIONS VOL. ONE most attractive is that my works mirror the human experience, and thus has a universal quality; while it’s based on and geared toward Black lesbians, most anyone can relate to the messages expressed.

Ella: Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
My goal for readers is twofold. First is for my Black lesbian audience, to whom the book is dedicated. My aim here is to reach out to others like myself, Black lesbians who have felt alone and separated due to a natural and unchosen predilection towards women. I state in my dedication, “Know that there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel”. These words were not chosen lightly, for often gays, especially those within the Black community, feel that there is no end to their social and emotional suffering. I want those readers to come away from my book feeling that they are just as human as anyone else, that what they’ve felt in life and in love is not as foreign as others would have them to believe. I want them to know that they are not alone in their experiences, now or ever.

The second half of my goal is focused toward heterosexual readers. Gays are mostly classified as an “other”, as some type of fluke within the species; we are often considered to be “less than” our straight counterparts. My hope is that straight readers of my book who happen upon it come away with a greater understanding that gays are just as human as anyone else. We suffer heart break, heart ache, great love, and great loss. Being gay only makes us different when others are determined to classify us as different. In reality, we feel no less than anyone else, and what we feel is no less common than what any straight person feels.

Ella: What is the one most surprising thing you have learned in creating books?
The most surprising thing I’ve learned is how fun and challenging this process can be, not just in the writing of books but in getting your name out there and your talent noticed. It’s been hard, of course, and I still have quite a long way to go, but the progress has been eye-opening and, dare I say, educational.

Ella: What would you say has been your most significant achievement as a writer?

Honestly, my biggest achievement is actually getting my work published. No, not just getting it published but publishing it myself. I’m a real hands-on type of person, and I like a challenge, so self-publishing had always been the only avenue I seriously considered. I’ve enjoyed the work and research, designing my book, getting my block of ISBNs and starting my publishing company, Black Tygre Publications. So many writers never achieve their goal of actually publishing their work, which is why that single success means more than any further success to come.

How did I do it? Research, research, and more research; the Internet can be your best friend! I have learned so much in this process, and still I know I have more knowledge to gain. You have to get yourself ready for a journey, not just a task, and for me that’s the most exciting and compelling aspect.

Ella: What advice would you give a new writer?

The best and most common advice for writers is to write. That may sound like a “duh!” statement, but in our hurried society sometimes it’s hard to find the time to just sit down and let words flow. Or, if you’re a bit lazy like me, you might put off writing for an unspecified time. DON’T! When the words and ideas hit you, get them down. Then be sure to go back and develop both idea and structure fully and correctly. One doesn’t need a degree in English, but basic command of grammar and spelling is a must. Also, try your hand at different types of writings. Expand your threshold and see how talented you REALLY are!

Ella: What can we expect from you in the future?
Simply, more creativity and vivid story-telling. My imagination is lively and full, which will make for more and progressively better stories and poetry. The more I live, the more there is to learn and tell. More specifically, I will complete the Visions of a Cryptic Mystery series, which will consist of three volumes. After those, or perhaps inbetween, I will pump out a novel or two; I’ve got a number of concepts I am working on. Basically, I plan to write until I just can’t anymore or until I run out of ideas, whichever comes first!

The SISTAHS Ministry Introduction

I BESEECH you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” ~Romans 12:1

OUR VISION
Uniting women and teenage girls to impact their world is the heart beat of The SISTAHS Ministry through partnering together in ministries of evangelism and compassion, to train, empower, support and encourage.
OUR MISSION
The SISTAHS Ministry gives leadership to at-risk teens, teen mothers, victims of domestic violence, authors, poets, women with business and other ministries. Through a shared vision and the empowering of the Holy Spirit, The SISTAHS Ministry works within the principles of the Bible to obey the great commandment and the great commission, carrying out Christ’s redeeming work of love, mercy, and justice in the world.

Saved by grace

In the beauty of holiness
Seeking to serve and encourage all women
Taking back what the devil has attempted to steal from us
Anointed by the power of God presenting our bodies
Holy and acceptable unto God which is our reasonable.
Service Victorious & Blessed!
Praise the Lord, My SISTAHS! Blessed and Victorious… And Loving It!

Thanks be to God who gives us VICTORY through our Lord Jesus Christ…” ~I Cor. 15:57

As we enter into this great time of Christmas celebration, we must not forget the reason we stand in the place of the Blessed and Victorious. The word commands that we are to Rejoice, O believer, that your life is bound up in Christ! Rejoice that in His holiness, you are likewise holy! Rejoice that in His eternal glorification, you are likewise glorified!
Stand true in your faith, and you shall evermore be clothed in the incorruptible and evermore shall you be given the gift of life eternal. Let our concerns for things take a back seat to this wisdom of the word of God. Whether it is layoffs, bailouts, foreclosures or rescue plans our faith and confidence in the word of God is the irrevocable answer to our stance.
Let our position conclusively remain in the place of the Blessed and Victorious.

Intimate Conversation with Simply Said Reading Accessories

Debra, finish this sentence: I am Powerful because…
I know to surround myself with people who are smarter than I
I have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge
I am not afraid to try
I absolutely love what I do

Ella: Nicolo Machiavelli says, “It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success nor more dangerous to manage than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who profit by the preservation of the old institution and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new one.” Did your company change the way consumers were previously taught to think?
Yes. Stop thinking only quantity think also of quality, and to raise the bar.

Ella: What got you started in this business/industry? How did you start your writing or speaker’s journey?
It all started by me giving all of my clients gifts for the holidays. They read under the dryer, I am a hairstylist. So it was a natural fit. I also added my salon information on them. One of my clients is author Marcia King-Gamble and she asked me to customize some for her. That’s Simply Said, how it all started. Giving them that gift became a gift for me.

Ella: What separates you and your firm from the competition?
Because I am such an avid reader, I really try to bring the authors vision to life as they try to do in their books. I know and understand that having your brand embedded into memory, is one of the most important things an author can do. Simply Said Reading Accessories is a signature, a brand, a gift that shows you’ve gone the extra mile. It also says that you have invested in yourself. Also I am first and foremost a fan so I tend to look at things from both angles, a business aspect as well as a fans point of view. Realizing and using those two visions I am able to create a good fit for the authors and their fans.

Ella: What one thing would you do if you knew you could not fail?
Hire help knowing I can pay them!!

Ella: Describe the strangest thing that has ever happened to you in your business?
Well, not strange but funny, I had to come up with a gimmick to get peoples attention. So I created a tee shirt that says, “Wanna See My Thong”??? I wear it to book events I attend. When I ask women “do you wanna see my thong” they answer back, no I have my own! I then say I want to show you mine anyway and they almost cringe at what the may see! I even had a few run. LOL Now of course the guys say YES!

Ella: What is your biggest challenge in business? How did you overcome it?
Honestly it was convincing people why my product is worth the money. Authors have gotten used to doing the 5000 throw away types. That I had to really work hard to make them understand that yes… those are appropriate in some venues but think of “gifting” your fans. Especially your loyal fans and Book clubs that support you. This has been one of the hardest they to get across, I am overcoming it by word of mouth and people seeing others using them as promotional material. http://simply-said.net/authorlounge.html

I created this slide show showing where most of the throw away type bookmarks end up after a festival and I caused a bit of a rumble. It made people stop and think about how your promo materials actually can be held on too. It opened a dialog.

Ella: What advice would you give someone just starting out in your industry?
In the Movie Dream Girls, there is a song called Patience and is the one thing YOU MUST HAVE in this business and in life… Do your homework. There is so much to learn. Please don’t just jump without studying the industry. You’ll save your self a lot of time, money and tears. Also re-invest back into your business.

Ella: What do you enjoy most about your profession?
I love meeting like minded people that are sharing, networking, meeting authors, seeing the finished products and the endorsements!! I am also enjoying traveling to many book events all over the country.

Ella: What are 3 things all leaders possess?
Drive, determination, and faith.

Ella: What’s new in your company for 2009?
Simply Said Reading Accessories is also adding new products and services! I have learned so much over the last few years that I will be starting a consultation division, to the growing list of services. I will be coaching you on how to get the optimum results out of your marketing budget, creating themes, and how to do it. Please contact me for additional information. This extension will be launched very soon.

7 Lessons for L.I.F.E. (Living in Faith and Expectancy)

7 Lessons for L.I.F.E. (Living in Faith and Expectancy)
by Cheryl Lacey Donovan

Today I begin a series entitled 7 Lessons for L.I.F.E. (Living in Faith and Expectancy). There are seven steps you can follow to reach the abundant life that God has purposed for you. The first step is to “Be Yourself.”

Many of us spend most of our lives conforming to what society says we should be. Yet, even the Bible says we should not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Romans 12:2. Remember, Jesus wasn’t put to death for going along with the program!

Being yourself, what God has called you to be, is essential to walking in your destiny.Being who and what God has called you to be is as natural as breathing. Yet, many of you are fearful, lacking confidence in the Word of God and what it promise for you.

Therefore, you yield to social pressure and use it as an excuse for not being yourself. Denying who you are according to God’s design, will cause you to live a life of frustration and discord. Supressing who you are in hopes that “man” will reward you will leave you coming up short everytime. Instead, you should be listening to what God has to say about you while living a life that is pleasing to HIM.

The steps of a good man are ordered by God. Where is He leading you? Will you follow?

Living according to God’s plans for your life will not always be popular. In fact, some people, even your family, may disapprove. The bottom line is our thoughts are not His thoughts and our plans are not His plans, therefore, it is not ours to question His will but to follow it. Not being who God called you to be will lead to unrest.

Recognize that people’s perceptions of you matter far less than what God has to say about you. Be “you” consistently. This will allow you to be honest and open with others as well as yourself. Be open to change if you are not aligned with God’s Word understanding that not being in His perfect will can draw you further from Him. You want to be everything that He has called you to be.

Don’t allow your faults to overwhelm you, but don’t ignore them either. Keep in mind no one is perfect, so self improvement, in alignement with God’s teachings, will help you walk in God’s destiny.

Being yourself begins with understanding and accepting yourself for who and what you are. Concurrently, you must yield yourself to God’s power and will for your life understanding that He can make perfect all things about you when you abide in HIM and He abides in you.
You were fearfully and wonderfully made in God’s own image. Therefore, He who has begun a good work in you is able to complete it. Don’t rely on your own understanding , rely on Him.
Believe in who God has called you to be.

Intimate Conversation with Victoria Thomas Poller

Meet Author Victoria Thomas Poller

Being married to a military man means you will get to travel the world and see places that others dream about. While going to these different locations you dream of what you want to do once all of this travel is done. Mrs. Victoria Thomas Poller was a fortunate young lady, who following her husband from military base to base. The difference occurred during her stay in Bitburg Germany; where this soon to be multifaceted business owner would begin getting her instructions and guidance that has her touch many lives with a simple book entitled “Where Did That Come From”.

While attending a base lead worship service, Victoria found the love of GOD and began to study and follow His teachings. Once her family relocated to Clovis, NM she began to take classes through RHEMA Bible Training to gain more understanding on what GOD wanted her to do and which direction GOD wanted her to go. The experience revealed to her how others within the Clovis community had a need to network, and the Clovis Christian Business Directory was born. For three years Ms. “V”, as known in the community, collaborated with all of the local business owners, churches and non-profit organizations to get them to put their ads in the directory. It generated new business for the Clovis community and brought the neighborhood closer together.
In 1994 – 2000 while working at Bealls Department Store and then opening her own cosmetics store, there was a lot of time on her hands in between customers. At this time the Lord was preparing her to be her own boss again, and to be able to influence others with His words through her. She admits that she did not understand exactly what was going on, but she was willing to trust GOD while He led and directed her.

She is the Dear Abbie of the Christian Circuit and can be reached on her website at http://www.victoriapoller.com/

Intimate discussion with Ella Curry of EDC Creations and Victoria Thomas Poller

Ella: What makes your book stand our and would entice a reader to pick it up? And ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your books?

Where Did That Come From? I Never Thought of It That Way is a non-fiction book that some people describe as a narrative collection of “disjointed thoughts.” One piece may not have anything to do with the previous story or the next account of events, but it contains anecdotes that will make you say to yourself, “She’s talking about me again.” You, the reader, can either say, “Ouch” or “Amen.” I know that I have said either one or the other myself.

It is not a novel that sticks to one subject, but it is a variety of thought-provoking topics and nuggets of information such as rituals that occur in church that you may not understand, how to act in public, what to do when you don’t want to hold your peace, how to treat other people, how to approach the ten commandments, getting in touch with yourself, getting close to God, and much more. There may be some things, which you’ve heard before, and there may be some new revelations that make you say, “Hmmm?”

You May Be Down, But You’re Never Defeated. Just as a fruit tree branch is heavy, when laden with fruit; so too are our lives sometimes heavy with problems. We sometimes bend under the pressures and strains that life brings us. We get depressed. We lack self-confidence. We don’t trust people. We say that we can’t take it anymore. We need a solution to our dilemma.

When things like this happen to us it’s good to know that someone else has gone through the same or similar situations as you have; and that they have made it through. You too should be able to identify with this book and make it through life’s journeys. You are not alone. You can make it with confidence. You can move your mountain that have kept you back. You can be an over-comer through Christ Jesus, the deliverer of all our problems. Learn how to stand tall like the majestic French Maritime Evergreen Pine trees (pictured on the cover) that sway in the midst of any storm. Bent But Not Broken will help you to enjoy what God has for you despite what the circumstances may look like. “You will bend, but you won’t break.” It’s like the old toy commercial, “Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down”. We may be tossed to and fro in the wind, but with our feet firmly planted in Him; we won’t fall down.

“These two books will guarantee your success if you take time to read them and put the information you’ve read into action.”

Ella: Victoria, finish this sentence: I am Powerful because…
“I believe and trust in the One who holds all power. I am, because God is… (read Scrumdidileyumschious! – Where Did That Come From? Revised) …He’s all that, and He made the bag of chips”.

Ella: Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.” Was there ever a point in your career, when how your life didn’t match the theory? And how did you change the facts?
“Sure there were times when problems seemed to be overwhelming, yet when I continued to hold on and trust the One who said that He doesn’t play favorites (Acts 10:34); that’s when God usually shows up & shows out.

He did it for me in “Bent But Not Broken” and also in the excerpt entitled, “I Acknowledge You” out of Where Did That Come From?-Revised”. I guess that I’m living proof that, if you hang out long enough and trust God; then He changes the facts to fit the theory, no matter what it may be”.

Ella: What advice would you give a new writer? Would you change anything about your journey?
“Writing, just as anything else that you do, has got to be your passion. You’ve got to like writing. You know you’re a writer when you write about something almost every day. You enjoy what you’re doing. Keep a pencil and notepaper handy everywhere. You never know when an inspiration may come to you and you need to jot it down. No matter if it’s scrap paper, sticky notes, or napkins; write the idea down and develop it while it’s fresh in your brain. Read and associate with others that share your passion of writing.

May I suggest: www.writerinterrupted.ning.com , www.victoriapoller.com and steppingstonesforwriters/index.htm as a start.”

“I would not change anything about my journey through this life except for tightening my seat belt and continue to enjoy the journey as I have been doing” 😉

Ella: What can we expect from you in the future?

Smart Marketing Solutions: the Foundation

Hello,

Before we can discuss marketing solutions, let’s get a clear picture of what marketing really is and the foundation you have to create before you can start the process of marketing. Marketing solutions will cover: the science of buying and selling books; the advertising, promotion, distribution and format of the books. It also covers the art of influencing people with your professional approach to writing and publishing a great book.

Many people confuse marketing with promotions and advertising, when the latter are elements of marketing not the process. At EDC Creations, we spend hours coaching our clients on the fact that marketing takes a dedication to learning, building relationships and establishing reachable goals. Marketing solutions will come from having a vision, a plan and the means to encourage readers to buy their books.

Marketing is the entire process by which you will identify your target audience, anticipate what they need and give the audience solutions and estimate their response. Once you know the audience, you will share your book with readers in a professional, appealing and cost effective way. Marketing is based on developing strong relationships to assist you in networking, advertising, promoting and gaining publicity. All of these fall under the umbrella of marketing. Marketing is the cart and the rest is what you fill it with.

Foundation for Creating Marketing Solutions

1) Write your vision on paper. Decide what it is you want at the end of the day. Brainstorm about ways to get the things you want and put them on paper so you can SEE where it is you really wanting to go. Think about your passions in life, the amount of money you have to invest, why you are really becoming a published author and what will this offer the reading community.

2) Create your marketing message. Your marketing message is a combination of the things that will later create your brand and determine how the reader will view you. It will tell your readers how you can solve their problems, why they should trust you, why they should buy your book and spread the word, also why they should keep supporting you later. The marketing message is the thing that will capture their attention.

Your marketing message is not created to solely tell them who YOU are. The entire marketing message is about telling your readers what your books can do for THEM. Even if it is a fiction book, it can show the reader how to deal with a difficult situation and come out on top. You have to share your unique ideas or style of writing to convey this message.

3) Define and identify who your target audience is and where they can be found. You can not reach all readers and your book is not for everyone. Use research to find those people who would benefit most from having your work in their hands.

4) Define the problems or issues surrounding this target; present your solution. When I say define the problem, I am not getting all political. It can be this simple: teens grow out of board books and children books. They now need books that will introduce them to puberty and peer pressure, the joys and ills of growing up. You can give them the solution by starting a teen series.

5) Present your results to the solution (a quality book) and tell them why they should select your book before any others. You will create wonderful marketing materials to capture their attention and you offer them your wisdom, experience, advice or a means to sheer entertainment in a well edited, properly produced book, at an affordable price.

6) Establish your brand and what it will take to strengthen it. Your brand is the vehicle that will take you to top of the book marketing game. Branding is the process of creating your image, the feelings, relationships, the actions and visual presentations your readers will come to associate with your name and the kind of books you put out. You will sell YOU as an AUTHOR as much as you will sell your message in your books.

7) Work on creating a network of people to help you with your marketing. You will need to create an internal support team, a social networking team, a business team and a publicity team to deliver your marketing message to the readers and publishing houses. You do this by communicating with others what you need, what you want and what you are willing to give to get it. Ask questions, do your research, seek help from the experts, but most of all really make relationships that will benefit you and the readers.

Now that we know what we are doing and have the foundation created to do it. Let’s get down to creating our marketing plan, marketing strategy and establish marketing solutions. The three all go hand in hand, it takes all three to be successful. My area of expertise is Internet Marketing, Promotions and Publicity. My contributions this month will focus primarily on those areas. Keep following the blog for more.

HOW ABOUT AN ANNUAL FINANCIAL CHECKUP?

HOW ABOUT AN ANNUAL
FINANCIAL CHECKUP?

by Tinisha Nicole Johnson

This year by no means has been a year like we haven’t seen in a long time: Economic crisis, financial problems, foreclosures and loss of jobs. However, all is not lost, you can get back on your feet and you can do something about it. How about an annual financial check up?

We get check ups on our cars, our houses, our bodies and even our pets. So wouldn’t it only make sense to get an annual financial check up on our life?

We all have dreams and goals. However, certain financial obstacles may put a dent or act as a stop sign against our plans to achieve those goals.

There are many financial changes that can typically occur in any given 12 month- period: being laid off of a job, retirement, a natural disaster, a major purchase, an illness, the birth of a child, a marriage, a divorce, a death, cost of college, providing care for an elderly parent and so forth.

What does it mean to get an Annual Financial Check up?
Simply put, it is an annual review of your financial status. Typically, Financial Planners will collect a client’s data (check stubs, checking & credit statements, titles for homes, tax returns, insurance policies, etc.), prioritize their goals, examine resources, make recommendations and implement a plan according to the client’s needs and personal goals.

Whether you are single, married, or have a family, you should want to be in charge of your future. It’s vital to set both short and long-term financial goals. A Financial Planner can help you to achieve these long term goals. Regardless of what your financial situation is, there are Financial Planners who specialize in a variety of areas and cater to your financial needs.

How can you locate a Financial Planner ?

There are plenty of Financial Planners out there and the relationship you have with a Financial Planner will be very personal. So in addition, also be wary of people who call themselves Financial Planners. A genuine Financial Planner is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) that is regulated with the state, has an ethical obligation to act in your interest, has no ethical violations against them and follows a Code of Ethics, which consist of: Integrity, Objectivity, Competence, Fairness, Confidentiality, Professionalism and Diligence. The Financial Planner may work as a Sole Practitioner or with a company. The Financial Planning Association (FPA) and the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP) both provide listings of Certified Financial Planners throughout the United States.

What can you expect from a Financial Planner?

You can expect them to review your current financial situation thoroughly and honestly. Additionally, they will provide a financial portfolio for you. Depending on your needs and wants, they will help you stretch out the money you already have and can even help you invest the money you are earning. A Financial Planner is interested in helping you meet your long term financial goals for the future.

Lastly, have more control of your financial future in this unpredictable world. It is always important to save – even just a little bit for a rainy day. And allow an annual financial check up to be apart of your future.

The Best Christmas Ever

The Best Christmas Ever
By Anna Wood

Our family has never had much money but we have a great time celebrating Christmas each year. You don’t need a lot of money to sing Christmas carols as you take a drive, read Christmas books to your children that you have checked out from the library, play a Christmas c.d. and dance to it with your babies or gather your children around and pull out the glue, crayons and construction paper and make Christmas-y paper chains or cut out and color paper Christmas trees and angels and hang them on your walls.

It doesn’t take much in the way of time, effort or money to drive your children around town and watch while their eyes light up (and listen as their voices raise to unbelievable heights) as together you get lost in the beauty of Christmas lights and revel in the magic of Santas, snowmen and sleighs. It’s not that hard to bake cookies with your children and involve them in decorating the tree…or the whole house… and lose yourself in the memories that you are making with your own Christmas angels.

Seeing Christmas through children’s eyes, it isn’t about money but about time; it isn’t about what you get but what you do.Go window shopping together. Or, if you can afford it, get them involved in buying a present for a child who otherwise might not get one. Hold them in your lap and tell them stories of Christmas past: your past. Tell them about what happened when Jesus was born and why it’s important. Decorate your children’s bedrooms: let each of them start their own Christmas collection that they can display on their dressers and then string lights over and around their windows. Of course, if they are very young you want to be careful with this but as they get a little bit older it makes their bedroom reflect a more magical place and time.

Play Christmas music as you decorate the tree together (Elvis, Roger Whittaker, Bing Crosby, John Berry, Kenny Rogers, John Denver–alone or with the Muppets– and the Tractors are some of our favorites at Christmas). Put on a Christmas movie (White Christmas, Christmas With the Kranks, The Santa Clause, Scrooge, Muppets Christmas Carol, I’ll Be Home For Christmas, The Christmas Stallion –or The Winter Stallion, as some refer to it– and A Christmas Carol are some of our favorites) and pop popcorn as you sort through decorations that have seen better days but still sparkle from the love reflected in your children’s eyes.

One of the best Christmases my older children had when they were the little ones was one of our poorest. On Christmas eve we gave them a coloring book, crayons and a pack of clay each and that was all. Santa then brought them a few toys and books (some of which came from yard sales). We were broke and it showed when compared to their friends but you wouldn’t have known it by looking at them. Their eyes glowed and they loved every moment of it. Their laughter was delicious on Christmas morning as they tore open the wrapping paper and gleefully showed off their treasures. Each thought that their presents were the best when compared with their brothers and sister (only one girl!).

As we tucked them into the bed at the end of the day, my tired but elated little ones told us that it had definitely been the “best Christmas ever!” They meant it, too. As Charles and I thought it over, we realized that they were probably right. We didn’t emphasize things that year as much as togetherness. Everything we did was for and with each other. Charles and I didn’t even exchange presents that Christmas but, then again, we didn’t need to. Our presents were sleeping in the room next to ours as we went to bed that night.

So, this Christmas remember to emphasize togetherness over things and celebration over presents. You, like us, just might end up having your best Christmas ever.

Authority and Responsibility of the Fathers

The Authority and Responsibility of the Fathers
By vaughn ohlman

In Scripture we see considerable emphasis on the authority and responsibility of fathers. Fatherhood is one of the primary metaphors that God uses to represent His relationship with us. It is a relationship that represents our dependency on, and submission to, God. As with any metaphor, there are points of contact with reality, and other points that are extraneous to the metaphor. When given the metaphor of sheep, we do not think that God expects us to go around eating grass, or have our hair shaved for making clothes. Similarly then there are parts of Gods ‘fatherhood’ that are not metaphoric of human fathers, and vice versa. We are not Gods sons in the sense that he literally impregnated our mothers. And our human fathers did not create the world we live in.

However when it comes to authority and responsibility the Scripture, far from separating these issues out of the metaphor, seems to treat them as primary links. It is primarily his authority over us that God references when speaking of his ‘fatherhood’. God, for example, disciplines us like our earthly fathers do. And this authority covers the issues of husband and wife. The issue is clearest in the area of brides, as even the language used, ‘given in marriage’, indicates that there is a ‘giver’; someone gives and someone is the gift.

However scripture also speaks to the issue of sons. We see this particularly in the best of scriptural examples, namely that of Adam and Eve, Isaac and Rebecka, Christ and the Church. One of the metaphors that Christ uses for his relationship with us is that of a groom and a bride, and one of the things repeatedly emphasized is that we have been given to him by the father. Similarly with Adam, God saw Adams need, and acted to meet it. A human father is forced to seek and to chose, in God’s case he literally created a bride for Adam. And the example of Isaac, we see a godly father acting to provide a bride for his son. He uses the resources of his servant to do the seeking and choosing, and he used his physical resources to pay the bride price.

However, in our generation, fathers have abdicated this responsibility. This abdication has been growing for years, we can find it’s roots in Calvin, in Shakespeare, and many other ancient writers, however we can also see throughout history, and even in a promotional sense today, the shadow of this responsibility. Shakspeare who wrote Romeo and Juliet, also wrote The Taming of the Shrew, and many a father and mother sit around the kitchen table lamenting the foolish choices of their son, knowing in their heart of hearts, their responsibility in spite of the teachings of their culture.

One weapon in the world’s arsenal against the formation of Godly marriages is the shift that they have successfully made in the quality of the reasons for marriage, a shift that has been accepted even by many within the church. It is quite common to read a book on marriage and to read page after page of reasons for marriage, none of which mention the specific biblical language ‘When need so require’. Our culture prefers to believe that marriage is ‘a nice thing’. It prefers to believe that it answers many of the desires of the heart. It does not wish to believe, it does not teach, it would argue vociferously against any suggestion that it meets a need.

And yet this is precisely what scripture says ‘nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife and every woman her own husband’ ‘to avoid fornication’ not ‘to meet the desires of ones heart’.

‘It is not good for man to be alone.’ Not ‘it is nicer to have a wife’. Not ‘it fulfills the desire of your heart’.

‘It is not good for man to be alone.’ ‘It is not good’: it is a bad thing.

‘To avoid fornication’. To avoid a sin.

Man has a need. God has provided an answer for that need. To reject, delay, or diminish God’s provision is something ‘that is not good’ it is something that leads to sin.

The world still believes that parents should meet the needs of their children; by separating the provision of a spouse from the concept of meeting a need they have succeeded in encouraging parents to abdicate this responsibility. We need to re-assume this responsibility, we need to actively move toward meeting this clear need.

Helping Teenagers Choose Positive Peers

Helping Teenagers Choose Positive Peers
By Sheila Gregoire

Kids are simple to figure out. They don’t want to eat fish; they do want ice cream. They want TV, Xboxes and the Internet; they don’t want Shakespeare. And they want cool friends; they don’t want geeks.

In general, then, whenever they’re given the chance, kids choose badly. It’s hardly surprising; our natural bent is to wander away from wisdom. After all, when one is mature, one does eat fish (because it fights against cancer), one does like Shakespeare (because it makes you look smart), and one seeks geeky friends (because they tend to be further up the ladder to success). We’ll still stash ice cream in the back of the freezer and play on the Xbox when everyone else is asleep, but we’ve grown up. We’ve learned what’s good for us, and we want to pursue it because it leads to God.

Kids, though, are still at the stage where cool rules. Even if they follow Jesus, they may still pull away from you because they’re busy separating to find their own identity. That’s why they find you strange. You talk about seventies sitcoms and you wear pathetic clothes. So they run screaming in the opposite direction, hoping to lure cool friends, because that’s how they gain popularity and the fleeting self-esteem that comes with it.

Parents Can Always Influence Their Children

But never fear: as parents we can still have a positive influence on our kids’ lives by praying for them and by surreptitiously influencing which friends they choose. I don’t mean by reverse psychology, where we criticize friends we secretly love to increase their appeal. No, instead I suggest sending kids to places where they are more likely to meet safe friends.

Encourage Their Hobbies and Talents

Obviously this is easier to do the younger you start, but even if your child is older, you can take steps to steer them in a positive direction. Encourage them to pursue hobbies or talents. That way, they can fit in with a group of like-minded people without having to change who they are. Band class was my husband’s road to salvation in high school. He had been teased relentlessly because he was smart, but when he joined band he found other “geeks” and didn’t feel so out of place anymore. He may not have fit in with the jocks, but he had enough friends who liked him the way he was that he felt less pressured to change.

Encourage Safe Youth Groups

Later he also joined a church youth group, and found other friends for whom drinking and swapping venereal diseases was not high on the list of things to do on a Friday night. Many church youth groups offer a low-stress opportunity to socialize. Kids who have trouble making friends, and are thus the most vulnerable to peer pressure, can often find much-needed acceptance here, because youth groups are focused on sharing the love of Jesus, they’re not focused on only attracting the popular kids.

Promote Part-Time Jobs

Finally, it may not seem glamorous, but flipping burgers has an upside. People who work at McDonald’s, or Wendy’s, or Taco Bell are likely to be a tad more responsible than your average high schooler. At least you know they’re sober enough to show up regularly for work. When I had part-time jobs I often worked with people older than I was, and fitting in with the high school crowd seemed far less important once I caught a glimpse of the outer world.

Don’t despair if your child has decided you’re not cool. Just manoeuvre their lives so they’re likely to meet other positive influences. And then, when the teen years are over, you can look back and rejoice that you encouraged them to be mature, even if they don’t know it.

Lust by Kelvin Gilmore

Lust
By Kelvin Gilmore

Lust is an enemy running rampant in the land.
It is secretly killing millions-it’s getting out of hand.

The lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes are the twin sisters of evil.
Laying eggs-destroying souls like cotton is done by boll weevils.

Dirty magazines, Cable TV and the Internet are their major tools.
Leading men and women to destruction like a carrot leads a mule.

These lusts sins are done in secret so most go undetected.
Demons feeding on men souls because their salvation is being neglected.

“Come out from among them” is what God’s Word says to do.
Ignorance of God’s Word destroys souls- people don’t have a clue.

Many Christians are deceived to think that they will receive a Heavenly Crown.
When Holiness, Godliness and Righteousness are nowhere to be found.

God is saying to you “I have eyes- I can see”
You choosing to love this evil world instead of me.

God’s servants are saying, Repent Now! Before it’s too late.
Pick-up your cross and follow Jesus for your soul’s sake.

Just like Noah’s time, God’s warnings are seldom heard.
People instead are listening to Satan being trapped and devoured like a bird.

Preachers! Preachers! You need to Preach!
There is no time for a prosperity speech.

Christians keep your affections on things above.
This world will pass away and the Lust thereof.

Prayer: Lord give me a content heart that is grateful for all you have done for me. Let me not lust for the things of this world, but keep my affections on things above. In Jesus name, Amen.

Footprints of Faith

Footprints of Faith
By Tessy Fuller

I gazed at the clouds drifting by the window and wondered if I could somehow contain the fluffy apparatus into my pocket. I imagined the face of my curious two-year old daughter as I placed it into her upturned hands. I envisioned that bringing home a cloud in my pocket would somehow make up for the time I would be without her.

As my husband and I prepared for our two week mission trip to Ecuador the “What Ifs” continually plagued my mind. I wrestled with guilt, wondering if I was being selfish? What if something happened to us? What would she do without her parents? Fear threatened to grip my heart. I started to question if I had made the wrong decision to go on this trip. My thoughts were riddled with worries that seemed to be blocking the door God had opened for us.

After spending a lot of time in prayer it dawned on me that this decision was critical on how I would choose to live my life. What kind of legacy did I want to leave behind? Her beautiful brown eyes watch me constantly. Her little mouth imitates my words. Would I want her to live her life in fear of the unknown or let God lead her on a marvelous adventure? As a mother, I knew I had a very important role in setting the tone for this decision.

Before we left, I wrote the following words to her in a letter that I plan to keep and give to her on her graduation day. “I am about ready to leave for Ecuador on a mission trip, which is part of the journey God has lead me on. I am going to miss you so much. I feel compelled to write you this letter to let you know how much you mean to me. I also want you to understand why this decision to go to Ecuador is so important. I love you with every essence of who I am. From the very first movement in my tummy I vowed to be the best mother I could be. In a few months you will be turning two. You’re at the stage where you imitate everything. This provides times of laughter and moments of self-reflection as I see myself mirrored in what you say and do. I know through my every action I am setting an example for you to follow, even if I am unaware of it at times. We all have a choice on how to live and I am choosing a life that is uncertain at times, but one that God intended us to have. A life of service to Him. I am going to help others that have much less then we do. We have been blessed with so much and I feel I need to give back. I hope I am giving you the best example to follow and that is to live life to the fullest by seizing divine moments on the journey God lays before you.”

Tears flowed down my cheeks as I penned each word. With every tear that fell I knew I had made the right choice. I would not let fear reign in my heart. I would not let divine moments God intended for me to have slip into oblivion.

Footprints of faith would be my legacy to her. The years will pass quickly and so will the opportunities to teach her. One day she will leave my home and set out on her own journey. When she gets to this point, I hope I have marked a trail with my life that will inspire her to follow God’s direction at every turn.

I am a 28 year old mother of a three year old daughter, Aleigh and one year old twins Ryan and Avery. I have been married to my husband, a youth pastor, for almost seven years. I love being a mom and serving God in our home church where I teach Sunday School for the 2’s and 3’s class.

Royal Etiquette

Royal Etiquette
By Brenda Douglas

Women were never created to be used as bait to entrap and hold men in bondage to pornography and sexual addiction. No! We have so much to offer to the world. Women have opportunities like never before. We are independently pursuing dreams, achieving goals, and securing jobs and other personal interests that have traditionally been off limits. Today, single women and parents are becoming homeowners, entrepreneurs, and etc..

Furthermore, women are able to leave a legacy for their children as well as make a significant contribution, not only, to their household but to society. We need to purposely remember our worth. When we value and respect ourselves, others will have no choice but to do the same. Your presence should command respect! Act like royalty. It only takes one great example and others will want to follow.

Choose your words carefully; believe that you have much to offer to the world; find ways to build your self-esteem; gain new skills; take higher level educational courses; walk like you’re the greatest creature that was ever created- because you are; and finally, stay away from anything or anyone that’s harmful to your health.

You must love and honor yourself, even with your flaws. Once you do, others won’t have a choice but to do the same. You are royalty and you deserve royal treatment!

Sisterhood of Yesterday

Sisterhood of Yesterday
By Heather Sargent

When did it become an ‘every mother for herself’ world? Didn’t it used to be a sisterhood of women raising their children together once upon a time?

I think often of what that would be like. To have the women in your life around you supporting you and befriending you. And how you would do the same for them. I imagine children playing while their moms sit together giggling about what silly thing their husband said to them this morning. Or how little Johnny got in trouble again but always gets caught in the most unusual ways where you can’t help but laugh. After you have disciplined him of course.

What would it be like to have the women closest to you understand that you too are just a mere human and are incapable of perfection? How you really do have the best of intentions but sometimes that hand basket from hell comes to take it all away. What if they understood that those things that appear to be bad parenting have a broken heart behind them that may just need a friend? Maybe there is an interesting story there of why things went the way they did.

A world where these sisters did not have one arm wrapped around you in a friendly hug with a knife in the other. A smile and friendly word to you, then biting, angry words at your back. A place where life was so simple that the person you saw in front of you, was the person you saw in front of you.

I long for the sisterhood of the days of old. This catty back-biting that women of today do just leaves me standing there scratching my head, wounds and all, as I slowly drop the knife I hold at my sisters’ backs.

Heather Sargent – 2008
A down-to-earth wife and mother of four, Heather Sargent has more than enough to write about. From the insanity of daily life to the quiet, magical moments which include sleeping children, she finds humor and joy in her chaotic life.

Letter to the Sexually Abused

Letter to the Sexually Abused
By Okwudili Umeweni

Dearie,

You never came across this article for nothing. God arranged it that you may be healed of your pains and also be a source of blessing to another one. You see, God is so much concerned about every of His creature that He longs to see us live a good life. When God actually brought me out of darkness into light, He arranged it so well without my notice. It is now I realize why He actually did it that way because of His immeasurable love for me!

The Holy Spirit wouldn’t have opened my eyes to see the pains and nightmares you are going through right now if He doesn’t want to do anything about it. God works through vessels, and now through this article He is extending His healing hands to your broken and shattered heart.

Yes, He knows how broken your heart can be, and only He can pick back the broken pieces and mend it. He knows the bruises you suffered; the emotional trauma you have been through all these while; the hatred that has filled your heart. You would have even committed suicide, but by the help of God’s angels, you are still alive till this day just because God knows you are a light.

Left for me personally, no long words of mine can go far in healing your heart but thank God for the Comforter, the Holy Spirit who is everywhere and knows everything.

Have this in mind that I have not written to let you know that you can forget what you went through; rather, I have written to let you know that you can still remember it yet without the pains. Mike Murdock said, “The healing of your memories will not remove your ability to recall your past, but rather give you the ability to replay the past without the accompanying pains.” It is possible.

It is my strong belief that after you might have finished reading this letter; rather than feel the pain as you remember the incident, you will only smile. Praise God!

A wise man said, “When you live in the past, your present is tarnished and your future is ignored.” That’s the truth. Oh, how I pray that God open your eyes to see what a bright and great future awaits you.

One thing the devil who goes about seeking for whom to devour does, is to utilize every opportunity of restlessness in one just to see that such a one concentrates on the problem and forgets greater things that lie ahead. Now, you will know the truth and the truth will set you free (John 8:32). The devil has been defeated. Hallelujah!

Job in his pain and anguish said, But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. (Job 23:10)

Perhaps, this abuse has made you not to trust any man. “They are all the same,” you’ve said.

Dear, that is hatred. It’s a lie of the devil. He wants to tarnish your future by such thoughts. Renew your mind and think well. All men are not the same; and the right one who will truly love you for who you are will actually come your way in Jesus name! (That is if you are not yet married).

“I have always wanted to be a virgin till marriage,” you have said. “But now I have been defiled. It’s of no use.” No you are not! The good news is that:

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Now, it all depends on how you see yourself because Christ sees you in an entirely different way NEW!

All you need is to stay engrafted in Christ. That’s all. When Jesus, the man of love and compassion comes into that broken heart, oh what manner of joy shall fill your heart!

Perhaps as a result of the horror you passed or are passing through now; or the wounds you sustained as it went on, you’ve become restless. Rejoice! Here is God’s promise to you:

For I will restore health to you, and I will heal your wounds, says the LORD, because they have called you an outcast, saying, this is Zion, whom no one seeks after and for whom no one cares!(Jeremiah 30:17 Amp)

Again I say rejoice! It is little wonder the bible says, Be happy [in your faith] and rejoice and be glad-hearted continually (always). (1Thessalonians 5:16 Amp)

What happens is that as you rejoice, it pains the devil to know that he cannot make you his slave.

Could it be there is still a bit of worry and pain in your heart, then read about these people who once were sexually abused even at a tender age, but rather than concentrate on the incident and its pains, they cast all their cares and burdens upon Jesus and pressed ahead. Now, they are world changers.

Joyce Meyer, that great woman of God, who runs an inspirational and motivational program, Enjoying Everyday Life, that is touching and changing lives around the globe was abused by her own father at a very tender age! Now she, through that experience, is helping out the broken-hearted. She now has four children. She says, “I had lots of hurt and lots of pain, lots of woundedness, bruises, and broken heartedness in my life. I was abused sexually by my father, abused mentally and emotionally. My mom didn’t know what to do about it, and she was being hurt in the process. So she just didn’t deal with it. And I can guarantee you, just because you don’t deal with something, that doesn’t make it go away.”

You may also know another great woman of our times Paula White, who as a result of family misunderstanding, her father committed suicide while she was yet five years old. Paula’s mother, Myra Joanelle Furr, later became an alcoholic. While her mother worked, Paula White was looked after by caregivers, whom she said sexually and physically abused her for seven years between the ages of six and thirteen years.

She had a baby out of wedlock but soon married the baby’s father. At age thirteen, while living in Maryland with her new born baby, partying and living a wild lifestyle, she was introduced to the gospel and became a Christian.

Now Paula is heard and viewed all over the world as one of the most sought after motivational and inspirational speaker, changing and restoring lives. Glory to God!

What about Tricia Benett who lost her parents at the age of five. Put in the orphanage home and was abused from a tender age of five at the orphanage every night. She would go to the graveyard to cry and pray for death. At seventeen, she attempted suicide and was sent to the psychiatric hospital.

One day she heard the preacher preach and she felt something leave her. She then began to feel God’s love. Later, God showed her a vision that she was going to rescue children and give hope to those who think there is no hope. Happily married, she was later used by God to write a book called Polly Brown.

Another lady called Shella E., was abused at a tender age of five by a fifteen year old babysitter. But now she is a world acclaimed gospel artiste.

I could go on and on but there’s limited space. I believe there are one or two things you’ve gotten from the stories of these women. You are not the only one or the first to experience such; but if you don’t ignore the pain of the past, you may end up being the only one that will end up badly. It’s your choice.

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live. (Deuteronomy 30:19)

In the course of such sexual abuse, you may have gotten pregnant. Don’t abort the baby! No baby formed in the womb is valueless. God can turn every mistake to a miracle. The provision to see the baby through will come. Only stick to God.

How do I begin to narrate the story of James Robison who was a product of rape? His 41-year old mother sought an abortion, but the doctor would not comply (Oh, how we need more of such doctors today).

After putting an advertisement in the newspaper, his mother gave him up to Rev. and Mrs. H.D. Hale, pastors in the Houston suburb of Pasadena. He would remain with them for a few years, until his mother reclaimed him as a young boy and took him to her home in Austin.

Now, James Robison and his wife, Betty hosts the daily television program Life Today, which airs around the world, touching lives!

What actually would have happened if the mother of James Robison was defeated by her present circumstance of shame and rejection and had aborted the baby? Perhaps the thousands of lives that are blessed round the world today wouldn’t have been.

God, speaking to Jeremiah, said: Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee: and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. (Jeremiah 1:5)

Never try to terminate God’s plan. He that takes care of the baby and makes it grow in the womb will take care of it while it is born. Only trust God.

Perhaps as you read this letter, one way or the other, you are still under abuse sexually by someone who is close to you and has vowed to deal with you if the secret is leaked. Don’t hesitate to report it to someone higher than him or your pastor. I believe with God’s wisdom in your pastor, he will handle it well.

Never get worried. Jesus, the Man who said, “Come unto me all you who are worried and have heavy loads, I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 paraphrased), still lives!

Dear, if you don’t feel true love from people anymore, mine is an exception. I love you with all my heart. That was why I obeyed the Holy Spirit to write this letter to make you know that what lies ahead of you is great. But the best news is that God who is love wants to live inside your heart. He is all you need in life.

I leave you with His promise to you:

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. (Isaiah 43:18,19)

Single Women of Virtue: Survival Tactics

Single Women of Virtue: Survival Tactics
By Katrina Mitchell

Part I

Hold out for the authentic: Don’t settle for a knockoff

Ladies, a lot of times we get caught off guard. How? We only look for advancements from lustful men outside the church. Newsflash! The devil is not afraid to come to church. His desire is to conquer. If he can break you down by sitting a spell, he will. When your adversary, the devil, perceives your strength and desire to be virtuous, he will lay out his red carpet of subtlety just for you. If he knows you’re strong and he can’t come at you directly, he will use his subtlety to join himself to you.

If you can’t beat them, why not join them? Joining yourself to something or someone is a very, very powerful thing; it is not to be taken lightly. What you join yourself to becomes one with you; you become it and it becomes you. So if a man has a lust demon, you get that demon; if he has a spirit of poverty, you get that poverty and so on. We all have issues, but it’s important to know exactly what you’re getting into. When you are going through fiery trials, a man being handsome and good in bed is not going to make a bit of difference. In the heat of the battle you need a soldier, not a civilian.

Marriage is one of the most important decisions in life, so take your time. Do not go by the outer appearance alone. Don’t fall for the old “God said you were my wife” line. Be wise; make your choice according to the word of God. Walk with confidence, know what you want, don’t compromise or lower your standards. Know the difference between a man with a vision and a man with a pipe dream; you don’t have 5 and 10 years of your life to waste. Boaz may take some time to get; anything worth having does not come easy.

Remember, at the end of the day you want a mighty man of valor, not a knockoff posing as one. A knockoff is what you get when you can’t afford to get the real thing, the authentic. The authentic, the real is what you get when you’re willing to pay the price for it. If the devil can pass a knockoff on to you, he will. The adversary is the king of knockoffs, isn’t that why he fell like lightning in the beginning? Sometimes when we get impatient, because the price is great to wait, we are tempted to settle for less. Don’t be impatient, don’t settle; yes, you will suffer as you wait but the suffering of being single and waiting is not as great as the suffering you will go through for getting with the wrong man. God always knows what is best. God is able to see the end from the beginning. Allow God to lead you.

Single woman of God, your job is to stay close to the Lord, seek Him, choose friends wisely, and don’t give place to the devil. He doesn’t need a large place, all he needs is a small place and he will take it from there. Don’t play superwoman, the devil knows exactly what you like. Unfortunately, everyone must face a season of temptation but during that time know it is what it is, a season; it will pass. Believe me, whatever the enemy has to offer is not worth the exchange. His ultimate goal is to steal, kill, and destroy. It’s a fight, it’s not easy but in the end you will be happy you waited for the right man.

If you have something personal going on with God, the enemy will try to seduce you out of that place. Once seduced, he will put you to sleep just like Delilah did Samson and you will wake up with your life ruined. Don’t let the wrong man ruin your life it is so difficult to come back from the ruins. But if you’ve made a mistake in the past God is faithful and able to bring you out. So ladies, hold out for the authentic Boaz. Boaz is not a perfect man, as you are not a perfect woman. Boaz is the one who God has for you that compliments you in the Lord. A woman of God needs a man with a purpose and vision aimed in the same direction as hers. Don’t compromise your virtue or your relationship with God for a cheap knockoff. See yourself as God sees you, precious. You deserve the best.

Meet Author Minnie E. Miller

Intimate Conversation interview with Minnie E. Miller

Minnie E. Miller is a native of Chicago’s Hyde Park, though she has lived in many cities over the past thirty years. She is an activist as well as a writer; has worked in politics since the age of eighteen. Her stories touch on political issues in metaphor—even her vampire characters in “Catharsis” are activists. “The Seduction of Mr. Bradley” is a political statement on humankind.

The Seduction of Mr. Bradley

Ted Grassley adopts and mentors Bill Bradley from high school to manhood. Ted is a CEO with deep pockets. Although married for forty years, he is bisexual.

Bill, caught in the throws of Ted’s lifestyle, complicates matters when he meets Jina Cook, a straight, attractive young lady. The two feel an instant attraction toward each other but both try to pretend it is not happening.
Finally, Jina makes the first move and Bill knows he can’t live without this woman. Unfortunately, Bill has a big secret; he is bisexual and finds himself torn between Jina and Ted, his male lover and father figure.

Deep inside Bill wants a regular life with a wife and children but guilt makes him think twice. This spontaneous and deeply gratifying tryst throws him off balance. What happens when Mr. Bradley reveals his bisexuality to the only woman he’s ever loved? An emotional war.

The Seduction of Mr. Bradley is a moving and powerful story of love, humankind, secrets and discovery. ISBN: 978-0-9722013-2-2 ISBN: 0-9722013-2-7

Intimate Conversation with Minnie E. Miller and Ella Curry of EDC Creations.

Ella: Finish this sentence: I am Powerful because…
I am Powerful because I am marvelously mature, have learned much from humankind in my seventy-two years.

Ella: “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.” – Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955) Was there ever a point in your career, when how your life didn’t match the theory? And how did you change the facts?
At age fifty-five I looked back on my work record and realized the longest I ever held a job was 4 years. That’s when I knew I didn’t fit into the corporate structure and needed to change my life. I felt I would fair better operating my own business. Of course, being close to retirement gave me the opportunity to leave full-time employment and survive on part-time work and writing, and soon Social Security. Please understand, selling my books offered very little extra income.
Ella: Minnie, tell us, where are you from?
I’m from Chicago, Illinois.

Ella: How did you start your writing journey?
What got me angry, off my fanny and into writing were the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill hearings. In October 1991 Anita Hill’s charges of sexual harassment against a former employer, Clarence Thomas, were made public on the eve of his confirmation as a Supreme Court justice. The Senate Judiciary Committee grilled Hill about the graphic details of the allegations and about her personal life. In the end, the U.S. House and Senate chose to dismiss her allegations, and Thomas was given a seat on the highest court in the nation. That hearing woke up my feminist muse in a powerful way.

At the same time, I had been recently “laid off” from my middle-management job, which added to my testy attitude. I wrote many letters-to-the-editors of newspapers and others protesting Congress’ treatment of Ms. Hill on national TV. What happened after that experience was priceless. I started writing my first novel, “Blue Lady Rising.” The first edit was necessary, but I disagreed with the second. I became discouraged and put the manuscript in my files where it sits some 12 years later.

Ella: Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?
Bill Bradley, the protagonist, is bisexual and Jina Cook is straight and his love interest. The two feel an instant attraction towards each other. Finally, Jina makes the first move and Bill knows he can’t live without this woman. He admits he is torn between Jina and Ted, is not only his lover but also his father figure and the man who rescued Bill when he felt the desperate need for love. Bill and Jina have strong wants and needs and puts up a good fight with their emotions. My belief in love and humankind drove me to speak through Mr. Bradley and he didn’t disappoint me in this novel.

Ella: What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader pick it up?
The cover—red silk sheets intimating sexual goings-on—and the title, The Seduction of Mr. Bradley. Usually it’s the woman who is seduced between those beautiful, red sheets not the man. The back cover is also an enticement: “Bill Bradley is struggling his way out of an unpopular lifestyle. A debt is his heaviest burden. He has strong feelings for Jina Cook despite his relationship with his male lover and allows her love to sway him in his weighty decision. He is well aware that he is in a constant state of emotional war. Walk with him. Feel his pain.”

Ella: Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
My hope is that people look at bisexuality as a human trait like any other. Also, that Bill Bradley is brave enough to question his life even after many years with his male sexual partner. He comes to realize that men who lead bisexual lives often long for marriage and children, too. I was shocked to learn through research that some women tacitly consent to bisexual behavior in their man.

Ella: What is the one most surprising thing you have learned in creating books?
That I have a muse, the ability to fantasize and transfer it to paper for others to read. Amazing!

Ella: What would you say has been your most significant achievement as a writer?
I approached writing and self-publishing late in my life without directed education. I had a few writing classes but not dealing with self-publishing—it hadn’t taken hold in those days. I dug, researched, asked questions in various writing group to get enough of a grasp to self-publish my books. When I look back at that, I am very grateful.

Ella: What advice would you give a new writer?
The same advice given to me: practice, practice, practice. Always write something even if it’s just how you feel getting out of bed in the mornings. LOLWould you change anything about your journey?I would have started this journey earlier so as to have many more years of writing ahead.
Ella: What can we expect from you in the future?
I’m working on a manuscript titled Whispers from the Mirror and just received my first professional edit back. Rewriting is the most challenging part for me. I hope to complete the manuscript and get a book published in the fall of 2009. I also have another novel that I’ve been working on. Maybe I’ll retrieve it the file cabinet and send it off as well.

Strebor on the Streetz
In Love with a Thug A Novel
During college, Juan Jiles fell in love with Darnell, who convinced Juan to help him rob one of Philadelphia’s largest banks. During the heist, Darnell is killed and Juan escapes with more than $175,000.
After mourning the lost of his lover, Juan begins rebuilding his life and uses the money to open a popular celebrity hair salon. Then along comes Bryant Thompson, a street thug with drugs, drama, and deception in tow. Juan falls head over hills for the hustling, muscle bound Bryant and soon succumbs to Bryant’s addictive world. Juan’s life starts to spin out of control and he realizes that his meeting Bryant didn’t happen by chance.

A story of a man doomed by p assion, In Love with a Thug is by turns a humorous, tragic, and hard-hitting look at the cost of destructive love and the price some pay for true happiness.

Intimate Conversation with Ella Curry, of EDC Creations, and Reginald L. Hall

Ella: Reginald L. Hall finish this sentence: I am Powerful because…
I am Powerful because….. I am powerful because I have the ability to open society’s eyes as a gay author without being ridiculed and disrespected by today’s society. I am powerful because my voice is powerful and can be heard.

Ella: Reginald, tell us about your passion for writing.
My passion for writing is opening up a whole new world in my brain and placing it on paper for the world to see. My vivid imagination will take me far in the literary game. I will be putting on my boots and began stomping with the big dogs.

Ella: Reginald, where are you from? How did you start your writing journey?
I am from Philadelphia. I started my writing journey when I was eighteen and went to prison. I went to Jail for the first time for eight months and kept a diary of all that happened. That diary eventually turned into my first Essence Bestseller Memoir Delaware County Prison. That lead me to the deal that I have today with Zane at Strebor Books/ Simon & Schuster. That Book is called In Love with a Thug.
Ella: Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?
Well in the book In Love with a Thug the two main characters are Juan Jiles and Bryant Thompson. The thing I like most about Juan was that he is a go getter. He knew what he wanted to do and what it was he wanted to accomplish and through all that went down in his life he accomplished all what he set out to do. Now Bryant on the other hand was different. The thug. I would say the most I like about him was that he wouldn’t stop at nothing to get what he wanted.

Ella: What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader pick it up?
The thing that makes my book stand out is that it’s real. It’s something that we all go through in life. From finding the right person, to getting crossed by different people in your life to accomplishing goals that we set out for ourselves. The thing that would make the reader would want to pick it up begins with the catchy title In Love with a Thug…

Ella: Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
What I would like my readers to gain from this book is to be mindful that there are brothers out here that are on the down low even if there thugs or hustlers. The down low lifestyle does not discriminate.
Ella: What is the one most surprising thing you have learned in creating books?
The most surprising thing that I’ve learned was there is a whole new world inside my mind when it comes to creating a scene and turning it in to a full fledge novel. Also, learning that I have a creative mind and can share it with others.
Ella: What would you say has been your most significant achievement as a writer? I would say that my most significant achievement as a writer is knowing that there are people out there that are buying my books. Knowing that what I create in the privacy of my own home is now public and is on bookshelves in store across America. From the first book that I wrote and taking it to the mom and pop stores and placing the books on the shelves myself and watching them sell is a great achievement for me.

Ella: What advice would you give a new writer? Would you change anything about your journey? What I would give a new writer is insight about the business. Just because a writer is anxious about getting a book deal or getting their work publish, please read the fine print in the contracts. At this point I wouldn’t change anything about my journey because of the ups and downs made me the bestselling author I am today.
Ella: What can we expect from you in the future?
What it is you can expect from me in the future is to continue writing my books and to expand my creations into television and movies. The sky is the limit for me.
Ella: How may the readers contact you?
You can learn more about me and my novels by visiting my website at: http://www.reginaldsworld.com/ or www.myspace.com/reginaldsworld or you can email me t: reginaldhall5413@aol.com

Best Christmas: Patricia Neely-Dorsey

Black Authors Network Interview with Patricia Neely-Dorsey

My name is Patricia Neely-Dorsey. I grew up and currently live in Tupelo,MS. I returned to my hometown in August 2007, after living almost 20 yrs in Memphis TN, working in the mental health field.

In February 2008, I published my first book of poetry entitled Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia-A Life in Poems. The main characters in my book , I would say,are myself and Mississippi. It is basically as the title suggests, my life growing up in Mississippi. It emphasizes family values, family ties, friendship love and self esteem.
There are so many negative connotations associated with Mississippi and the south in general, in my book , I attempt to give a positve glimpse into the southern way of life. In speaking at schools, I especially try to emphasize to the children to be proud of who they are..proud of where they come and proud of the lives they live.

I think the reader would be drawn to my book because of the sentimental, light-hearted, uplifting, and positive and sometimes humorous poems which make the reader remember their own wonderful childhood memories, family stories and common human life experiences..Plus, I think the book has a very attractive cover that is quite appealing (smile)

The thing I have found most suprising in writing publishing and promoting this book is just how many people out there write poetry. I call them the closet poets. It has never failed at every speaking engagement some person or several people come up to me and tell me that they write poems and have just been afraid to show them to anyone or didn’t know if they were good enough to publish or just had them for themselves. It goes across all lines of age, color, gender and occupations. …students, principals, janitors, teachers, doctors nurses, you name it. They tell me they have their poems in boxes, in closets, under the bed ect…so many ‘stories’ waiting to be heard..waiting to be told.

At this time, I am diligently trying to promote this first book, to try to give it a fighting chance to shine in the literary world. I have hundreds of poems ,so there should be no problem with material for many more books to come. They are in the works. My publisher has been in encouraging me to consider an illustrated childrens book with select poems from this current book.

My advice to new writers is what I call Patricia’s P-Attitudes….Positivity (Stay Positive) Persistence (Be Relentless) and Perseverance (Never Give Up ..Don’t Take No For An Answer)

If I can write and publish a book anyone can…consider this I wrote my VERY FIRST poem February 14, 2007 ..at the age of 43 I didn’t even learn how to log on to the computer OR e-mail until January of this year..2008..and I STILL type with two fingers!

If that’s not an amazing story and encouragment to any others who might want to try t navigate the waters of the publishing world..I don’t know what is!

An Extra Ordinary Affair by Baba Evans Moore

Meet Baba Evans Moore, Urban Griot and author of Just a Picture in a Frame, The Pastor’s Letter, and An ExtraOrdinary Affair.

MP3 File

Listen to Ella and Baba in an Intimate Conversation

An ExtraOrdinary Affair is the greatest love story of the year. It shows how a woman, Siobhan, decided to stop trying to please the men in her life, faced her adversaries, and trust her natural abilities. When she freed her mind, Richard appeared.

The self-made millionaire met the first woman who was not overwhelmed by his massive wealth. Smitten by an unfamiliar feeling of helplessness and becoming emotional, Richard decides to offer Siobhan a compromise in exchange. He introduces her to his world of international business and she develops a new life of self-empowerment. This novel shows women how to step from under their mate’s spotlight, let go, use their God-given abilities, and become whole. I feel passionate it will work.

Intimate Conversation with Ella Curry of EDC Creations and Baba Evans Moore

Welcome Baba Evans Moore! Finish this sentence: I am powerful because …

Baba: I am powerful because I have a unique insight into people’s minds and predicting their actions.

Tell us about the two main characters in your novel:
Baba: Siobhan because she was gutsy enough to take on a rich man by simply doing what she knew best. Instead of aggression, she ushed her feminity and was coy enough to trust its effectiveness. Curtis, the limo driver, knew his role, was comfortable with it, and understood what loyalty meant .

What makes your novel stand out and will entice a reader to pick it up:
Baba:
The book cover is eye-catching. It appeals to the curious and demands to be viewed closer.

Ultimately, what do you want the reader to gain from my novel:
Baba: If you are in a unhealthy relationship, don’t give in and become complacent. Get out of it. Let go and let God. Learn to believe in your self and your ability to overcome.

What would I say has been your most significant achievement as a writer:
Baba: I have written five novels, four self-published and the last by XYP Publishing. I won two awards, “Disilgold’s YOUnity Reviewers Guild Award”and C&B Publishing’s “Author of the Year.”

Review for An ExtraOrdinary Affair
Thought-Provoking, Entertaining and Memorable, October 13, 2008

Award-winning author Baba Evans Moore, of An Extra Ordinary Affair has done it again — created a thought-provoking, entertaining and memorable book. This novel is centered on its protagonist Siobhan persevering through pain, hopelessness and bitterness as a result of bad relationship experiences to eventually rise above these issues and embrace a more rewarding and fulfilled life.

Although this novel is not considered Christian fiction, it sure brought to my remembrance the scripture Psalm 30:5 (KJV)…weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning and that blessings come when we least expect them.As usual, Moore’s character development is great and the storyline was one that I thoroughly enjoyed from the beginning until the end. An Extra Ordinary Affair is a worthwhile read and I look forward in the future to reading many more books by this gifted author.

Meet Author Darnyelle A. Jervey

Meet Author Darnyelle A. Jervey

Welcome Black Authors Network Family, today we have with us author Darnyelle A. Jervey. She is here to motivate and stimulate you to put out your book too! Are you ready yet?

Intimate Conversation with Ella Curry of EDC Creations and Darnyelle A. Jervey.

Hello Darnyelle A. Jervey, please finish this sentence: I am Powerful because…
I am Powerful because…I know my purpose and I walk in it daily.

Where are you from? How did you start your writing journey?
DJ: I am from Delaware . I was born, raised and educated in the First State . I was born with a story in my spirit. My name alone means, ‘the secret place where dreamers go to dream’ and through my pen, not only did I learn to dream, but I learned the art of inviting others to take the journey of fulfilling a dream deferred with me.

I started writing at the age of ten, when my journals became my way to escape the hell that was going on around me. I love to tell others that I come from a bunch of nothing; an environment where my family existed in chaos and animosity. Through my pen, I created an environment where my soul could thrive. My love for creativity and my imagination were cultivated in high school as a result of my English teacher, who was an author. Through her eyes, I was able to see the possibility that I, too, one day, could share my love of words with other people to inspire and empower their lives. I have been writing short stories, poetry and novels ever since she showed me the possibility of language.

What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader pick it up?

DJ: My book is my memoir. It is based on my very own true story, or at least a part of it, as I am not finished living yet. As they say, God is not through with me yet, but what I know for sure is that what I have already lived is a page turning masterpiece! Because my story is the truth (I took some creative liberties so that my story would read like a novel that the reader would be unable to put down,) I know that readers will become engrossed in the opening paragraphs and not stop reading until the story is finished.

I changed the names of each character to protect the innocent, as well as the not so innocent. My writing style is one that engages the reader and invites them to take the journey of self-discovery with me.

The title alone will get readers to pick it up. I don’t know many people who cannot in confidence say “if you understood my past, you would understand my praise.” If a reader has been through anything that has enlightened them and taught them the importance of self-esteem and self-love, they will enjoy my story. If they have not but desire to become enlightened and develop an Incredible self-esteem, my book will inspire them to do so.

Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
DJ:
The ultimate goal of my book, If You Understood My Past, You Would Understand My Praise, is to empower people to look at my life and by using my story as a back-drop, gain perspective and realize that they are worth more. Too many of us allow ourselves to be treated like a cubic zirconia because it looks like a diamond to the naked eye. I want the reader to stop defrauding themselves.

A cubic zirconia and a diamond are not the same and my reader is a diamond and should be revered and respected like a diamond. As people who were raised in an environment not conducive of love and acceptance, we often go looking for love in all the wrong places only to realize that the path we took did not yield the results that we were hoping for. I have endeavored, through telling my story, to illustrate the importance of looking inward and spiritually for the love that we seek.

Once we have found our ability to love ourselves, we can then go into relationships healthily and get the love that we deserve to receive when we invite others into our space. My book is also about helping others to realize their “praise.” The praise that I describe is not just about my love affair with Christ, it is also about self-love, self-worth, self-confidence and true joy and happiness. I know that by unlocking my own personal lock box of issues and family secrets, I was able to confront my past and conquer my fears about my future. I want my readers to be able to do the same.

What can we expect from you in the future?
DJ: I am currently working on three (3) literary projects and I fully expect to produce a total of five literary works in 2009. I am currently working on the following: 1) The Incredible You: Unleash Passion, Abundance, Confidence and Expectation in Your Life, a self-help/inspiration non-fiction work about the steps that I took to define and live my Incredible Life. It is due out in 1st quarter 2009. 2) A Quick Work, my first fiction work, is about love and the power of God. It is due out in 2nd quarter 2009. 3) I am co-writing a memoir, And Then My Living Shall Not Be In Vain, a story about a courageous woman’s victorious battle with breast cancer. It is due out in 4th quarter 2009.

Meet author Che Parker

Meet Che Parker author of “The Tragic Flaw” and “The Precious Life”

Ella Curry of EDC Creations has a one-on-one with author Che Parker. Readers, find out more about the journey of an author. Do you have a book in you? Are you publishing in 2009?

Intimate Conversation with Che Parker:

Hello Che Parker, finish this sentence for us: I am Powerful because…..
I am Powerful because… I’ve been blessed with a God given talent to create stories with words. These stories can be insightful, funny, scary, and most important of all, influential.

Where are you from? How did you start your writer’s journey?
I’m was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. Growing up I witnessed a lot of troubling events, like many kids in the inner city do. I was fortunate enough to have a loving and supportive family who wanted to see me do well, so I was able to attend good schools, but I never forgot my roots. My family and friends were never the richest people, but the love and support they offered me was and continues to be what gets me through the day. I always enjoyed writing and I’ve been fortunate enough to have people around me who want the best for me. That can make all the difference.

Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?
In my second novel, The Precious Life, the two main characters are Joshua and Kathryn Lyon. I like them because they’re ordinary people. A lot of books of have the rich handsome guy and the sexy, beautiful woman. Joshua and Kathryn are neither. It was interesting writing from their perspective because nothing was glamorous, and everything was hard.

What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader pick it up?
First off I think I have an amazing cover. It’s very subtle, but I think it’s powerfully suggestive. I think subtlety deserves a second look these days.

What advice would you give a new writer? Change anything about your journey?
Read, read and read some more. I think by reading diverse fiction writers from around the world a writer can learn new ideas and develop new approaches to material. And let people read your work. Most will probably offer good ideas. Use what you can. But always stay true to the story you want to tell. I wouldn’t change anything about my journey. Everything is a learning experience. Soak up what you can and keep moving.

What can we expect from you in the future?
Deeper stories, new narratives, and more profound meaning.

First Comes Love by Shana Burton (Urban Christian Books)

First Comes Love by Shana Burton (Urban Christian Books)

Where do broken hearts go? To Las Vegas, of course! At least they do if they belong to real-estate agent London Harris and restaurateur Bernard Phillips. Too bad what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay there…

Find out what happens after that fateful trip to Vegas and what happens when Christian fiction collides with urban drama in my latest novel, First Comes Love (Urban Christian). Best friends London and Bernard jet off to Vegas for a night of parties and casinos to numb their broken hearts.

What they don’t count on, however, is waking up next to each other the following morning with a nasty hangover and a signed marriage certificate. London and Bernard nix their plans to quietly and quickly annul the marriage when London’s grandmother uses a fast tongue and biblical principles to convince them to try to make their marriage work.

It doesn’t take the newlyweds long to realize that maintaining a friendship is a lot harder than sustaining a marriage. Their constant bickering leads London to finding solace with Creighton, an old flame who’s trapped in a loveless marriage of his own. Their marriage is further strained when Rayne, a sexy new temptress, sets her sights on Bernard.

After a night of passion leads to unintended consequences, London and Bernard seek God for answers and are forced to decide if loving someone means holding on to that person at all costs or being willing to let go.
