Hollywood Skye by Suzetta Perkins
Skye Taylor-Culbertson is a naïve, attractive 19-year old who coerces a soldier from a nearby army base to marry her to get as far away from her small Kansas hometown. But she comes to realize that she’s in a marriage from hell and with very little money, she leaves her husband for the bright lights of Los Angeles, a city that she’s ill-equipped to navigate, to pursue an acting career. The budding actress puts her life and livelihood into the hands of a man, who becomes her manager, and just as her minimal success as an actress begins to soar, she is arrested by the feds for participating in her manager’s illegal business, of which she is unaware. And one wrong turn and several bad decisions may not only cost her a blossoming acting career but also her life.

A sudden shadow loomed over her and she looked up into the face of a tall, mocha-colored brother. He had a thin mustache that sat neatly above his lip. A well-lined, close-cropped haircut framed his face. At a glance, he reminded Skye of the actor Leon that she had the pleasure of meeting during a brief encounter at a movie shoot. The gentleman was dressed in a crisp pair of Calvin Klein jeans that were creased so well that it looked as if it could cut somebody; a long-sleeved, white, starched dress shirt; and a black linen jacket. If Skye were to guess, the gentleman looked to be in his thirties—middle to late thirties. And he was handsome. But when he lowered his head to get her attention, not that he already hadn’t, it was his cologne that seduced Skye.
“Are you eating alone or should I ask if this seat is free?” The gentleman’s smile was inviting.
“One Oscar,” the waitress said, placing a plate of three wings, grits, egg, and a fluffy biscuit on the table in front of Skye.
“Well…yes, it’s free, although I was studying.”
The gentleman sat, not waiting for an official welcome. “What are you studying?”
“A script for a part I recently landed.”
“So, you’re an actress.”
“Yes. I have a small recurring role in a television sitcom.”
The gentleman cocked his head and gave Skye a true once over. “This may be your lucky day.”
