Books by Janet Autherine

Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul, is a beautiful collection of poems that tell the stories of strong, vulnerable, courageous women who love deeply, sometimes fall hard but always lead with their hearts. It is a deep and gritty, fresh and robust look at the thrill of loving unconditionally, as well as the mental and physical toll that it takes when peace and harmony are sometimes lost in the process. Drawing on personal experiences from her own journey of the past 30 years, J Autherine delves into the vulnerable hearts of women from around the world, including from her early years in Jamaica.

Growing into Greatness with God, 7 Paths to Greatness for our Sons and Daughters is inspired by her own experiences growing up in Jamaica, as well as her experience raising her three sons to recognize and nourish what God has planted within each of them. Her goal, through her writing, is to empower adults and children to see themselves as unique and amazing, already blessed with the ability to succeed in life and achieve their dreams.

Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul: Poems and Inspiration to Live and Love Harmoniously (Poetry) by Janet Autherine

Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul, is a beautiful collection of poems that provide inspiration to strong, vulnerable, badass women who love deeply, sometimes fall hard but always lead with their hearts. It is a deep and gritty, fresh and robust look at the thrill of loving unconditionally, as well as the mental and physical toll that it takes when peace and harmony are sometimes lost in the process.

Drawing on personal experiences from her own journey of the past 30 years, J. Autherine delves into the vulnerable hearts of women from around the world, including from her early years in Jamaica. Poems such as Quiet Storm reveal the pain of sudden loss, while The Rebel Soul carries with it that air of doubt or uncertainty we all feel when in love.

The pain and struggle of women who love deeply and pour into others without first filling their own jars is prevalent throughout, as is the reoccurring theme of reclaiming your heart in order to live and love harmoniously.

Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul has the ability to pick you up in moments when you feel broken or not good enough to be loved and provide the strength in the love you always need as we search for the one who is worthy of our love.

Excerpt: Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul

Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul is dedicated to women everywhere who lead with their hearts. It is risky business for us because we feel deeply and love hard. It also means that we are prone to falling hard. Falling hard is easier when you have a peaceful place to land. Sometimes, we have to create that perfect landing place in our soul. Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul is the yin and yang of love. Let your wild heart run free, enjoying every mile of the journey, but also make sure that it knows how to find its way back home. Wherever you are in your journey, I hope that you have the freedom to let your heart run as wild as it can without sacrificing the peace that your soul needs. Never forget that self-love is the springboard for all the love that you give. When we love and care for ourselves, our vessel is full enough to pour into others. We have to commit to loving ourselves, fiercely, passionately and unconditionally.

“Your greatest weapon is the pen. Write your own happy ending.”

THE PRINCESS TAKES THE HIGH ROAD

Believing all the fairytales, she waited patiently for her prince to return.

She continued on the low road for as long as she could

before realizing that the high road was the only way to rise;

the only path to the castle.

She sharpened her weapons,

slayed through the self-doubt,

cut the fear from her heart, and

trimmed all the edges that were blocking her vision.

With a clear vision, she wrote her own ending. “The princess bravely scaled the walls of the castle. As she rose to the top, she created a path for the other young ladies who would follow and placed a beacon on the top of the castle to light their path. The End.”

“Sisters, let us embrace our femininity, our vulnerability, our humanity. We are sometimes strong, sometimes fragile, but always perfectly made.”

HER KING

She is not passive but she is peaceful.

She is strong but she has vulnerabilities.

She wants to be the boss at the office

but not the boss of you.

Bring her your strength.

Empower her.

She wants to feel your masculinity.

Grow taller around her.

Inhabit the earth, reach for the sky.

Show her your power.

Spread your feathers like the male bird.

Make your inner beauty shine for her.

Her shoulders are already heavy, so just for tonight,

leave your insecurities at the door.

Don’t shed empty tears around her,

unless you plan to catch them

and use them to water her spirit,

her dreams, your love for her,

your passion for only her.

Allow her to exhale in your presence.

STRONG SISTERS UNITE

My sisters, we are standing in the quicksand of

political, racial, relationship and other societal dysfunctions

Bravely declaring our strength and struggling to

hold it together but at what cost

We have nothing to prove; let us protect our minds & bodies

Our strength is being used against us

Our ability to be the fixer in every situation masks

our humanity, our femininity, our vulnerability

Let’s not wait until we can’t breathe to try to escape;

if we delay the healing, our scars will be permanent

The world knows that we are strong because our strength is legendary

We are Harriet Tubman, Michelle Obama, and Rosa Parks.

We are Oprah Winfrey, Nanny, and Mae Jameson

We are Shirley Chisholm, Portia Simpson and Maya Angelou

We have birthed a nation, rescued slaves, built empires,

traveled to space and written our place in history

Survival is not enough; we were built to rise

Let us take each other’s hand in love and support

Embrace our vulnerabilities

Embrace our humanity

Heal our hearts and minds

Escape from negativity is not failure

Self-preservation is not weakness

Strong Sisters, together we are stronger; together we rise.

BPM: It is such a pleasure to have you join us to discuss, Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul: Poems and Inspiration to Live and Love Harmoniously. Describe yourself in three words.
Kind, peaceful and introvert.

BPM: How long have you been writing? What drove you to publish your first book or create your first series?
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. As an introvert, I always felt more comfortable writing my thoughts instead of speaking them. My first book, Growing into Greatness with God, was published to inspire children to realize that there is greatness inside of them.

BPM: Describe what you do outside of writing to expand your business or brand.
Autherine Publishing and the Growing into Greatness brand is known for inspirational material. In addition to books, we publish quotes, poetry and interviews on our website (www.JanetAutherine.com) and social media (@JanetAutherine) to keep our audience inspired.

BPM: What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your body of work/books?
I was surprised that I had so many thoughts and emotions to pour into the poetry. Because I grew up in a household where we didn’t easily express our emotions, combined with years of “just the facts” legal training, I have never been one to pour my heart out so I was shocked at how easily the emotions flowed from my heart to the page.

BPM: How did you choose the genre you write in? Have you considered writing in another genre?
Whether I am writing for children or for adults, my writing aims to be inspirational. Affirming or inspiring others come naturally to me, so I believe that the inspirational/self-help genre chose me. I have been working on a middle school novel for a few years now and trying hard to stick with the story and not turn it into a self-help book for kids. I have always had a vivid imagination so I am looking forward to working with my three boys to create a novel that middle school children will love.

BPM: Tell us about your most recent work of poetry. Available on Nook and Kindle?
I am really excited to share my first book of poetry and inspiration, Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul! This collection of poems and inspiration is a love offering to strong, vulnerable, badass women who lead with their hearts, love deeply and sometimes fall hard. The poems are inspired by my own journey spanning 30 years; it also dives deeply into the vulnerable hearts of women globally. Many of the poems capture the pain and struggle of women who love deeply and pour into others without first filling their own jars. The poems and inspirational quotes provide empowerment by holding a mirror to our common struggles and motivate us to care for ourselves and rise above our challenges.
Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul is available on Amazon, major booksellers and on Kindle.

BPM: Introduce us to the topics in the book! Give us some insight into your creative space.
A reoccurring theme in Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul is reclaiming your heart in order to live and love harmoniously. Chapter 1, Wild Heart, takes the reader on a journey of self discovery — being an empath in a sometimes harsh world, feeling broken after losing love, not feeling good enough to be loved, facing rejection and abandonment, and navigating life with a heart that just wants to love unconditionally. The second chapter, Peaceful Soul, is an empowering meditation on the peace that comes with reclaiming your heart — finding strength in the love and support of sister friends, practicing self-love while responsibly loving others, and finding joy in loving those that are worthy of our love.

BPM: What’s so unique about your voice in this book?
Truth and authenticity of emotions. I tried to capture the stories about love and life that women only speak about to their best friends, if at all.

BPM: Share one specific point in your book that resonated with your present situation or journey.
There is a poem titled, The Princess Takes the High Road. With a clear vision, she wrote her own ending. “The princess bravely scaled the walls of the castle. As she rose to the top, she created a path for the other young ladies who would follow and placed a beacon on the top of the castle to light their path. The End.”

It is about taking control of your journey and writing your own story. We all get to a point in lives when we no longer want to be defined by others and we are ready to create our own footprints in the sand. That is where I am in my journey and I am blessed to be able to share my stories with readers.

BPM: Are there certain characters you would like to go back to or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?
Empowerment is important to me. Most of the poems that I am currently working on are about uplifting and empowering each other.

BPM: Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?
I would avoid any writing that is overly harsh or critical because I believe that we are all on a unique journey and we are here to love and support each other.

BPM: Have you ever received a rejection from an agent or a publisher?
Yes, I did for my first book, Growing into Greatness with God. It was a very sweet and encouraging rejection letter and it inspired me to keep writing. It also taught me that the words that we use matter, even when we are saying no to someone.

BPM: Do you ever have days when writing is a struggle?
Writing tends to be a struggle for me because my thoughts are scattered. I have to write three pages and then edit it down to one page that is readable. However, I have learned not to get frustrated with myself and that the story comes together at its own pace. Don’t rush the writing process but write every day whether you want to or not, whether it makes sense or not, because the writing is what makes you a writer.

BPM: Have you written any other books that are not published?
My next book is Everything’s Irie: An Island Girl’s Approach to Mindful Living and Being. It will be available on Amazon January 2019.

BPM: What projects are you working on at the present?
My primary focus is on sharing the books with as many readers as possible. My first book, Growing into Greatness with God, has become a mission for me because it is an important motivational read for children. I am working to get it distributed internationally and to as many churches, and international children’s missions as possible. I would love for every child to have access to it and to provide it at no cost to those who cannot afford it.

Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul is really resonating with women and I am excited to get out and meet all the readers. I am happy to meet with your bookclub in person or virtually. My next book is Everything’s Irie: An Island Girl’s Approach to Mindful Living and Being. It will be available on Amazon January 2019.

BPM: How do you stay connected with others in publishing and your readers?
I am a member of several writing associations, including the Association of Writers and Writing Programs, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and I follow almost every book club or writing group on Instagram.

BPM: What legacy do you hope to leave future generations of readers and new writers with your writing?
The best writing comes from a place of honesty and authenticity and that extends across all genres. I certainly hope that my books will continue to touch souls and empower the next generation to live out loud, grow into their greatness and leave footprints in the sand for others to follow.

BPM: What is your preferred method to have readers get in touch with or follow you?
I love chatting with readers, authors and aspiring authors. Don’t hesitate to email at JanetAutherine@gmail.com or DM on Instagram @JanetAutherine

BPM: How can readers discover more about you and your work? Share all of your social media links.

African American Poet Releases New Book With Poems That Explore the Heart of Today’s Woman

Words have long been regarded as a means to wellness. In moments of crisis and frustration, a phone call from sister-friends and family can serve as a woman’s lifeline. When those who would serve as a support system are unavailable, comfort can be found in prayer, a song, or poetry.

The genre of inspirational poetry has encouraged scores of people. Revered poets, William Ernest Henley, author of “Invictus.” and Robert Frost, author of “The Road Not Taken,” offered hope and inspiration for decades. Author, Janet Autherine’s newly released title, Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul: Poems & Inspiration to Live and Love Harmoniously (available on Amazon), was written to be a source of inspiration to women of this generation who lead with their hearts, especially young women.

An attorney-at-law by trade, helping others has always been her passion. Autherine recognized that many women choose to face personal struggles by isolating themselves, out of fear or embarrassment or the need to show strength even when feeling vulnerable. Motivated by her faith and passion for writing, she created this book of inspirational poetry to capture the pain and struggle of women who love deeply and pour into others without first filling their own jars. Both strength and vulnerability are recurring themes, as well as embracing self-love and reclaiming your heart.

Wild Hearts, Peaceful Soul: Poems & Inspiration to Live and Love Harmoniously is a 170-page book that reminds us that moments of despair and heartache are a normal part of life’s journey but are also only temporary.

“Heartbreak, rejection, abandonment are universal struggles, even though they may cause us to feel alone,” says Autherine. “Regardless of how others may have treated us in the past, we are worthy of love. We are not alone; our friends are facing very similar struggles. We have to love ourselves enough to allow those past hurts to heal, so that we can live and love in a physically and emotionally healthy way.”
