11/24/2013 – 8:00 PM   Raising Readers Panel Discussion
“You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.” — Madeleine L’Engle

Award winning, bestselling African American authors and illustrators will educate, enlighten and empower you on the creation of books for young readers: pre-school to young adults. We will explore the journey of eight writers of children’s fiction. We are discussing ways to engage young readers in history, finance, college and their future career paths. Speakers will share their latest books and the platforms behind the stories. Several of the authors support foundations or projects that take our books internationally!

This panel is celebrating National Family Stories Month!  We all have family stories, tall tales and folklore based on our communities. They are entertaining, yet powerful because they serve to connect our families through the ages. By telling our family stories, we can preserve family history and unlock conversations that can become history lessons too.

“It’s the children, the world almost breaks, who grow up to save it.” — Frank Warren

We bring the readers books that can truly transform the lives of our kids when shared! The books featured during this panel will enhance the lives of those who read them, as much as they have the lives of those who wrote them! Readers and emerging writers alike will discover things they never knew about the world of YA publishing.

11/24/2013 – 9:00 PM   Meet Four Writers on a Mission

“Dance above the surface of the world. Let your thoughts lift you into creativity that is not hampered by opinion.” —Red Haircrow

Four exceptionally talented, top-selling authors will talk about their motivation for writing, how they prepared to be an author, how they crafted a unique story. Each author will read from their book and share how they have enjoyed true success without losing their true self. The choices we make about our lives now, will determine the kinds of legacies we leave for future readers and writers! Ask the authors about the sacrifices or paths they chose for their journey.
